How do buildings handle loads from top to bottom?
The secret is in the vertical load path – from slab β†’ beam β†’ column β†’ foundation.

Lower columns are bigger because they carry cumulative loads from all upper levels!

example calculation (2-story building):

Β· A (roof slab load) = 50 kN
Β· B (Level 2 beams + columns) = 30 kN
Β· C (Level 1 slab + beams) = 40 kN
Β· D (ground column + foundation) = 60 kN

Step by step:

1. Level 2 column carries β†’ A = 50 kN
2. Transmits to Level 1 β†’ A + B = 80 kN
3. Level 1 column adds C β†’ 80 + 40 = 120 kN
4. Foundation gets total β†’ 120 + 60 = 180 kN

That’s why lower elements have larger dimensions – they support β€œA+B+C+D”!
