Following an overwhelming response at CCA, Bikaner House, Ratan Parimoo: Grammar of Seeing, A Retrospective of Becoming continues at Gallerie Splash, Gurgaon.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter Parimoo’s artistic practice with renewed attention, through paintings, drawings, collages, and material explorations that trace his movement from early observation to a deeply considered language of abstraction.

For those who experienced the exhibition at Bikaner House, this continuation invites a second, slower viewing. For those who missed it, it offers a rare opportunity to engage with one of the most significant reassessments of Ratan Parimoo’s work.

Art critic and curator Girish Shahane reflects on Ratan Parimoo’s work and on curating his earlier exhibition at NGMA.

His recollection opens up an important part of Parimoo’s story: the gradual recognition of an artist whose public identity as an art historian and teacher often stood larger than the extraordinary body of work he continued to create.

Ratan Parimoo: Grammar of Seeing, A Retrospective of Becoming, curated by Satyajit Dave, brought this artistic practice back into focus through paintings, drawings, collages, archival material, letters, photographs, and rare documents spanning several decades.

The exhibition at CCA, Bikaner House closed on 16 June, and has now travelled to Gallerie Splash, Gurgaon, where it remains on view until 31 July.

A chance to look again at Ratan Parimoo, the artist behind the art historian.

In this moment from the panel discussion, Prof. Ratan Parimoo speaks about a world held together by letters, friendships, and artistic exchange.

For Parimoo and his contemporaries, correspondence was a way of thinking together, staying connected across cities, sharing ideas, and building the intellectual life of modern Indian art.

These letters formed an important part of Ratan Parimoo: Grammar of Seeing, A Retrospective of Becoming, offering rare insight into the relationships, conversations, and networks that shaped his practice.

The exhibition closed on 16 June at CCA, Bikaner House, New Delhi, but the conversations it opened continue.

Today, Prof. Ratan Parimoo turns 90.

Today is also the final day of Ratan Parimoo: Grammar of Seeing, A Retrospective of Becoming at CCA, Bikaner House.

For all of us at Gallerie Splash, it has been deeply moving to present this retrospective in the days leading up to such a special milestone. What began as months of research, archival work, conversations, and careful looking has become a celebration of an artistic life shaped by memory, method, teaching, scholarship, and an unwavering devotion to seeing.

We are profoundly grateful to Prof. Parimoo for his trust, generosity, and presence, and to everyone who came, listened, looked, remembered, and helped make this exhibition so meaningful.

As the exhibition closes today, we honour an artist, scholar, and teacher whose life and work continue to open new ways of seeing.

Gallerie Splash presents Grammar of Seeing, a major retrospective of Ratan Parimoo’s practice, bringing together paintings, prints, drawings, collages, works on paper, and a substantial archive of photographs, letters, correspondences, and writings. Conceived as both an exhibition of works and an exhibition of process, it traces the evolution of an artistic language shaped by observation, study, experimentation, and sustained inquiry.

Spanning decades of practice, the exhibition moves between early life studies and mature abstractions, revealing not a shift away from observation but its transformation into a deeply personal visual language. By placing artworks alongside archival material, Grammar of Seeing offers a fuller view of Parimoo’s legacy—as artist, thinker, teacher, and chronicler of his own journey, inviting viewers to encounter both the work and the consciousness that shaped it.

We invite you to spend time with a practice that has shaped generations of artists, scholars, and viewers.

We are deeply moved by the overwhelming response to Ratan Parimoo: Grammar of Seeing, A Retrospective of Becoming.

This exhibition has been months in the making. It has taken shape through research, archival work, conversations, careful looking, and the collective effort of an entire team committed to presenting Prof. Ratan Parimoo’s artistic life with the seriousness, warmth, and attention it deserves.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to every person who contributed to making this exhibition possible. To the lenders, collectors, scholars, artists, friends, collaborators, designers, fabricators, technicians, and everyone who worked quietly behind the scenes, this exhibition carries your effort within it.

Above all, we are profoundly grateful to Prof. Ratan Parimoo for his trust, generosity, and openness in allowing us to enter his world of works, archives, memories, and ideas.

On view till 16 June, the exhibition presents a major reassessment of one of the most intellectually rigorous yet under-recognised figures of Indian modernism. Staged across the CCA building at Bikaner House, it traces Parimoo’s journey from early figurative, landscape, academic, and Kashmir-related works of the 1950s to an independent and materially ambitious language of abstraction that developed from the mid-1950s through 1980.

Bringing together artworks, student records, Baroda Group material, letters, exhibition invitations, catalogues, photographs, Courtauld documents, lecture notices, and international correspondence, Grammar of Seeing positions Parimoo within a dense network of artistic and intellectual exchange, from Baroda to London, Bombay, MIT, Berkeley, and beyond.

This retrospective is more than a return to an artist’s career. It is a corrective act of looking. It asks us to reconsider Ratan Parimoo as a pioneering artist-scholar whose work expands the history of Indian abstraction through memory, method, material intelligence, and a disciplined grammar of seeing.

His proximity to figures, peers, and institutions such as N. S. Bendre, Mulk Raj Anand, Patwant Singh, Jyoti Bhatt, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Shanti Dave, Naina Dalal, the Courtauld Institute, the Museum Society of Bombay, the JDR III Fund, MIT, Berkeley, and Baroda’s Faculty of Fine Arts situates him within both Indian and global histories of modernism.

It asks viewers, scholars, institutions, and collectors to reconsider Parimoo as a pioneering artist scholar whose work expands the history of Indian abstraction through memory, method, material intelligence, and a disciplined grammar of seeing.
