Chitwan introduces travellers to a side of Nepal far removed from its familiar Himalayan landscapes.
Its forests, grasslands and rivers provide habitat for greater one horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, gharials, sloth bears and abundant birdlife. Jeep safaris, canoe journeys and guided walks allow the landscape to be experienced in very different ways.
The Terai is also home to Tharu communities, whose traditions and connection with the region provide valuable cultural context beyond the national park.
Two or three nights fit naturally between Kathmandu, Pokhara and other parts of Nepal, adding wildlife and a completely different ecosystem to the journey.
Chitwan is not simply Nepal's wildlife stop. It reveals how diverse the country becomes once the Himalayas give way to the plains.

Manali is widely associated with snow and mountain holidays, but its character becomes more interesting beyond the busiest parts of town.
Traditional villages, apple orchards and deodar forests connect Manali with the culture of the wider Kullu Valley. The Hidimba Devi Temple, built in a distinctive timber style and surrounded by forest, provides one of the clearest expressions of that relationship.
Manali also sits at an important geographical transition. Travel through the Atal Tunnel towards Lahaul and the lush landscape changes dramatically into a higher, more austere Himalayan environment.
Choosing the right season and staying away from the busiest centre can make a considerable difference to the experience.
Manali is familiar. The landscapes surrounding it can still be surprising.

Gangtok provides an excellent introduction to the landscapes and cultures of Sikkim.
Buddhist heritage is an important part of that story. Rumtek Monastery and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology offer different perspectives on Tibetan Buddhist traditions, while monasteries and prayer flags remain part of the wider cultural landscape.
The city itself reflects Sikkim's diversity, with Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali influences appearing in its food, markets and daily life.
Two nights work well before continuing towards Sikkim's villages, monasteries and higher mountain landscapes. Spring is particularly attractive for Himalayan flora, while autumn often brings clearer views.
Gangtok may be the starting point for exploring Sikkim, but it deserves to be understood rather than simply passed through.

Tea gardens, a mountain railway and views of Kanchenjunga may be Darjeeling's most familiar images, but together they tell only part of its story.
The tea estates surrounding the town have shaped the landscape since the nineteenth century, while the UNESCO listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway remains an extraordinary piece of mountain engineering.
Darjeeling's character is equally influenced by the communities of the eastern Himalayas. Nepali, Tibetan, Lepcha and Bengali traditions can be encountered through local food, monasteries, markets and neighbourhood life.
Spring and autumn are particularly rewarding, and a stay of around three nights gives travellers time to explore beyond the viewpoints.
Darjeeling is not simply a hill station. It is a meeting point of landscape, history and cultures that developed together in the mountains.

The forests of central India are home not only to remarkable wildlife, but to communities whose traditions have developed through generations of living within these landscapes.
Gond culture is particularly recognised through its visual art, where animals, trees, mythology and everyday stories are expressed through intricate patterns. Baiga communities have their own distinct traditions, including knowledge connected with forests and plants and the practice of godna tattooing.
These traditions should not be approached as staged attractions. Community led visits, conversations with artists and knowledgeable local guides offer a far more respectful way to understand them.
For travellers exploring central India, this cultural context adds another dimension to landscapes more commonly associated with national parks and wildlife.

here is a reason Ganesha appears so often at the beginning of things in India.
He is associated with wisdom, good fortune and the removal of obstacles, invoked before journeys and important new chapters. During Ganesh Chaturthi, this symbolism takes on a larger, more visible form as homes and communities welcome him through ritual, craft and celebration.
For visitors, understanding that meaning adds another layer to the festival. It is not only about celebration. It is also about the significance India places on how a journey begins.

Loktak Lake is one of Manipur's most distinctive natural landscapes.
Across its waters float phumdis, masses of vegetation, soil and organic matter that create the appearance of moving islands. They form an important part of the lake's ecosystem and have long been connected with fishing and communities living around its shores.
Loktak is also closely linked to Keibul Lamjao National Park, where the floating wetland provides the last natural habitat of the endangered sangai, Manipur's brow antlered deer.
Boat journeys, viewpoints around the lake and time at Keibul Lamjao allow travellers to understand how wildlife, wetlands and local livelihoods are connected.
Loktak is not simply a beautiful lake. It is a living ecosystem unlike almost anywhere else in India.

Most journeys to Agra begin with the Taj Mahal. The more interesting ones do not end there.
Agra was one of the great centres of the Mughal Empire, and its monuments reveal different chapters of that history. Agra Fort reflects imperial power, Itmad ud Daulah shows the growing sophistication of marble decoration, and Mehtab Bagh reconnects the Taj Mahal with the Yamuna and its historic garden setting.
The city's artistic traditions remain visible too, particularly in the intricate marble inlay work still practised by local artisans.
An overnight stay allows travellers to experience the Taj Mahal at a more considered pace while giving Agra's wider history the attention it deserves. Delhi, Jaipur and Fatehpur Sikri can then extend the Mughal and Rajput story further.
Agra is famous for one monument. Its history is considerably larger.

The Little Rann of Kutch is one of Gujarat's most unusual landscapes.
Its salt flats and dry grasslands are best known as the principal habitat of the Indian wild ass, but the ecosystem supports considerably more. During the cooler months, seasonal wetlands attract flamingos, cranes, pelicans and other migratory birds, while desert adapted mammals occupy the drier areas.
The Rann is also a working landscape. Agariya salt workers spend months extracting salt from its mineral rich groundwater, continuing a livelihood closely shaped by the region's demanding conditions.
A visit therefore combines wildlife, birding and an insight into how people have learned to live within an extreme environment.
Combined with Ahmedabad, Patan and Modhera, the Little Rann adds a very different dimension to a journey through Gujarat.

Naini Lake gives Nainital its unmistakable setting, but the surrounding hills provide much of its character.
Developed as a hill station during the nineteenth century, the town still carries traces of that history in its churches, schools and older architecture. Forest walks, viewpoints and the local markets add another layer, connecting visitors with the landscape and culture of Kumaon.
Nainital is particularly enjoyable when visited outside the busiest holiday periods, when there is more space to appreciate the lake and surrounding countryside at a slower pace.
It also works well as an introduction to a wider Kumaon journey, with Bhimtal, Almora and other parts of the region extending the experience beyond one hill town.
