The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi (12 September 2026) marked a significant moment for global carbon policy. The New Delhi Declaration backs deeper cooperation among BRICS nations on carbon markets through the newly established BRICS Carbon Markets Partnership, while firmly opposing unilateral trade measures such as CBAM.
At the same time, India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) gaining recognition under the UK's upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism marks an early but meaningful step toward international alignment of India's domestic carbon market.
We have put together a brief examining what these developments mean in practice, covering the announcement, the context on BRICS and India's carbon market, how the EU and UK CBAM frameworks operate, and the opportunities and challenges ahead for Indian industry.
