District Congress Committee (DCC) Baramulla, led by District President Mir Iqbal, along with senior leaders and party workers, today held a press conference at the Congress office in Baramulla regarding the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and concerns over voter-list changes.

Addressing the media, Congress leaders referred to the resolutions adopted by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on September 29, which called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of the SIR process and restoration of 13.3 crore names that the party claims have been removed from electoral rolls.

The DCC Baramulla said that the Congress wants greater transparency in electoral-roll revisions and demanded that complete data regarding additions and deletions be made available to political parties. It also sought reasons to be provided to voters whose names are removed and a fair opportunity for them to appeal.

Congress leaders further raised concerns over the reported differences among Election Commissioners regarding certain decisions and procedures linked to the SIR exercise. These concerns have also been reported nationally, including reports of written objections by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

Regarding Jammu & Kashmir, the Congress said that no SIR should be undertaken without adequate safeguards, consultation with all political parties and publication of booth-wise data, adding that the people of J&K have already waited for years for the restoration of their electoral rights.

The party also reiterated its demand for an independent, time-bound inquiry, including an outside audit of ECI’s election-management systems, and called for strengthening the Election Commission as an independent constitutional institution....
