A Home where Architecture breathes through Courtyards.

Designed on a narrow 25’ x 100’ east-facing plot, this 4000 sq.ft. residence celebrates its site’s strongest assets - two existing trees that anchor the western backyard. The entire planning evolves around a series of intimate “Plumeria (chafa)” courts, placed across levels, weaving nature into every space of the house.

From the moment you enter through a narrow basalt-lined passage, the experience unfolds layer by layer - a living space opening into a lush backyard, a grandparent’s room engaging with the street, and a central dining and puja zone rising into a dramatic double-height volume.

The upper floors revolve around a vibrant central spine of bridges, staircases, and open-to-sky courts creating a visual and spatial dialogue across levels. Every bedroom connects not just to views outside, but to living pockets of landscape within.

Materiality reinforces the concept - a grounded basalt base anchors the structure, while lighter exposed brick screens wrap the upper levels, filtering light, air and climate. The east facade becomes a breathable skin, while the south stays minimal and dead responding to harsh sun. The west opens generously to nature with terraces and balconies overlooking the preserved trees adorning the backyard.

The journey culminates in a serene backyard - a breathing oasis with water, greens and a gazebo.

A house not just built on a plot, but crafted around courts - where every space feels alive, connected and grounded in nature.

Layers of stone, light and courtyards shape this compact urban home.

Located on a narrow 29’ x 63’ west-facing plot, this 3685 sq.ft. residence explores how spatial depth, light and courts can transform compact urban living.

The house is conceived as a composition of three interwoven layers - a central spine, open courts, and habitable spaces flanking either side. This spine, expressed through a staircase and double - height courtyard, becomes the heart of the home visually and spatially connecting every level.

Entry into the house is through a narrow passage defined by a rugged Basalt stone wall, softened with landscape. This stone surface extends inward to form a feature wall within the courtyard, punctuated with small devalis for diyas, lending a quiet spiritual character to the space.

At the ground floor, the central court anchors the plan, with the living room opening to the west and the kitchen - dining placed towards the east. The northern courtyard is recessed below plinth level, drawing inspiration from traditional Indian stepwells, with stepped levels that invite pause, light and breeze into the home while strengthening the connection with nature.

Above, a bridge overlooking the courtyard links two bedrooms, transforming circulation into a space of interaction. The upper level also accommodates a separate tenant unit, accessed through an independent staircase.

A Jharokha inspired projection on the second floor becomes a cozy seating nook from within while lending character to the facade.

The exterior expression balances weight and lightness. The ground floor appears as a solid plinth of random rubble Basalt masonry, while the upper floors transition into lighter layers articulated with brick screen walls that filter harsh western sunlight and heat.

The result is a home where courtyards, stone, light and screens come together to create a layered architectural narrative rooted in tradition yet expressed through a contemporary language.
