We often expect young people to make career decisions as if they already know exactly what they want. But early in your career, experience is information. A role that teaches you something valuable, exposes you to a new field or helps you understand what doesn't suit you can be a good career decision even if it isn't the highest-paying or most prestigious option available. You don't have to stop being ambitious, but give yourself room to learn before you optimise.
What are you actually passionate about? It sounds like a simple career question, but passion isn't always obvious. Sometimes it's something you've loved for years. Sometimes it shows up in the things you're naturally curious about, return to repeatedly, or want to keep learning about. In this snippet, Dr. Srividya explores the passion question as part of an Ikigai-based approach to career exploration. And this is only one part of the bigger picture.

Sometimes, the right job is simply the one that works for where you are right now. But it helps to ask what that choice is also building: a skill, an experience, a network, a clearer understanding of what you want or even clarity about what you don't want. You don't have to know your entire career path before making your next move. You just need to understand what this move is doing for you now, and what it could make possible later. What are you actually good at? Understanding your strengths can reveal possibilities you may not have considered. In this snippet, Dr. Srividya explores one of the questions at the heart of an Ikigai-based approach to career exploration. But this is only one part of the picture. There are other questions worth exploring before deciding what kind of work could be a good fit for you. Watch the full Ikigai video on YouTube to explore all four.

Sometimes the problem isn't that you don't have enough motivation. It's that the thing you're trying to do feels too big to begin. When “figure out my career,” “get healthier” or “get my life together” becomes the task, it's easy to feel stuck before you've even started. Try making the starting point smaller: create your resume, walk 30 minutes 5 days a week, or switch off the phone at 9 pm. You don't always need to feel motivated before you begin. Beginning itself could create the momentum.

Your first job, course or career direction can give you something valuable even if you eventually change course: experience, skills, self-knowledge and clarity. You don't need to know exactly where you'll end up. You need to make a choice you can learn from and adjust. Need help figuring out your next step?
