In India, even the cash in your pocket is a guidebook.

Look closely at the money here, and the country’s monuments are printed on it. The stone chariot at Hampi on the fifty. The sun wheel of Konark on the ten. The great stupa at Sanchi on the two hundred. Each one centuries old, and each one a place you can still walk into.

In South India, the plate is a leaf.

A banana leaf, laid fresh. On it, a meal with an order to it- rice in the centre, curries in a ring around it, pickle and papadum to the side, something sweet to finish. At a feast, the leaf goes down with the tip pointing left, dishes come in a set sequence, and you eat the whole thing with your hand. Nothing fussy about it. And all of it exact.

This is the India we want you at the table for. Not the meal laid on for tourists - the one a Kerala family would know as their own.

An Indian spice market can overwhelm anyone who walks in cold. The colour, the crowd, a hundred open sacks and not a label you can read.

But every sack has a source. Every lane has the vendor who grinds his own masala, and the shop that keeps the real saffron out of sight. What looks like chaos to a visitor is a map to the people who shop here each week.

That is the line we cross for you. Beside you in the market is someone who knows every stall, every source, every vendor worth trusting. Not a ticket into a place, but the person who can read it.

Half the pleasure is in the getting there.

A private carriage on a toy train through the hills. A seaplane setting down on your own stretch of lagoon. A shikara gliding across the lake at first light. A vintage Ambassador waiting at the kerb, a houseboat held for you on the backwaters. This is how a journey should begin, long before the destination. From Kashmir to Kerala to the Maldives, the way you travel is the luxury.

Today we celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, remembered through the butter and the cradle, the flute and the peacock feather.

Everyone comes home from Bhutan with the same photograph: the monastery on the cliff. It is worth the climb. It is also where most visitors stop looking.

The country past that one view is the one worth the trip. Punakha dzong above the river, a fortress and monastery at once, its walls painted by hand. Festivals where whole valleys gather, and masked dancers turn through stories older than the walls behind them. Archery, the national sport, played with handcrafted bamboo bows across a field longer than seems possible to aim. Khuru, the dart game, thrown on an open pitch by men in gho. A table of chillies and cheese and red rice, eaten slowly, the way the country eats.

This is the Bhutan we build journeys around. Not the postcard. The place.

Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and all those affected by the devastating floods.

To the families who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods, and to the communities facing the difficult days ahead, we stand with you.

We also recognise the incredible efforts of local communities, emergency responders and organisations working tirelessly to provide relief and support.

Nepal is a country of extraordinary beauty, warmth and resilience, and one that holds a special place in the hearts of so many travellers and members of the QXP community.

Freedom was not won in one place, or on one day.

It was argued in ashrams and answered in prison cells. It was declared on open maidans and paid for in gardens that should have known only quiet. The monuments of the independence movement stand across the country, from Amritsar to the Andamans, each one holding a chapter of how India came to govern itself.

This Independence Day, we return to five of them. Not as sights to be ticked off, but as places that remember.
