π’ Marine Cargo Insurance Case Study: When Moisture Damage Leads to Claim Rejection
A shipment of grass mats was transported from Hong Kong to Long Beach, USA.
At the port of discharge, the consignee found part of the cargo wet and unsellable.
π What was the claim?
The cargo owner stated that:
π Damage was caused due to moisture and seawater ingress during transit
π Filed a claim under marine cargo insurance
π Survey Findings:
An independent survey revealed:
* β No container leakage
* β No structural damage to container
* β Damage caused by **container sweat (condensation)**
* β Cargo had **moisture residue before shipment**
* β Lack of proper drying & ventilation
β Claim Outcome: Rejected
The insurer denied the claim stating:
π Loss was due to Inherent Vice (natural property of goods)
π Not caused by external insured perils
π° Financial Impact:
* Cargo Value: $1,000,000
* Claim Settled: $30,000 (partial)
π‘ Key Learning:
Not all damage during transit is insurable.
π Poor packaging & pre-shipment condition can void claims
π βInherent Viceβ is a **major exclusion** in marine cargo insurance
This case highlights that risk starts before loading not during transit.
In shipping,
β Packaging
β Moisture control
β Cargo preparation
are just as critical as insurance coverage.

A business suffered a major fire loss.
The damage ran into over βΉ1 crore.
The policy was active.
The claim was filed.
Still, it was rejected.
In this case, the issue was not the fire.
It was the details behind the policy.
It was found that:
β’ the actual use of the premises differed from what was declared
β’ the risk profile had changed but was not updated
β’ certain policy conditions were not followed
From the business perspective, the loss was real.But from the insurerβs perspective, the contract told a different story.Insurance decisions are not based only on what happened at the time of loss.
They are based on:
β’ what was disclosed at the beginning
β’ how accurately the risk was represented
β’ whether the policy terms were followed throughout
The number may be large.
But in insurance, the outcome is decided by the details.
