A capital proposal tends to be at its most persuasive on the day it is signed. Purchase price, IRR, payback, all lined up and defensible. The difficulty is that most of what determines whether it was a good decision has not happened yet.

We have watched this play out often enough to raise it early. The purchase price is usually the smaller number over a system's life. Spares, scheduled maintenance, energy draw and downtime run for a decade or more, and for long-lived equipment they tend to outweigh the cost of acquisition. None of it is hidden. It simply sits outside the frame the CAPEX conversation is usually held in.

The point is not that price does not matter. It is that price is the part you settle once, while the rest you pay for every year. A decision made on the first number alone is only half evaluated.

If a capital decision is on the horizon, it is worth running the ten-year figure alongside the purchase price. We are glad to help you build it out. Write to us at [email protected]

There is a quiet contradiction in a lot of omega-3 processing. The goal is a clean, stable concentrate, and several of the standard routes to it apply heat, the single condition an oxidation-prone oil can least afford.

EPA and DHA are fragile by design. The long polyunsaturated chains that carry the health value are studded with the double bonds that oxidation attacks, which is why these concentrates degrade so readily. Purify them with heat and you are, in part, accelerating the problem you are trying to solve.

This is where the case for CO2 is less about yield than about protection. Low temperature removes the thermal driver of oxidation, and because the work happens in an inert, oxygen-free environment, the oxygen that oxidation requires is absent from the process itself. The concentrate is fractionated and cleaned without being cooked.

For anyone working with oxidation-sensitive oils, the method is not a detail. It is most of the shelf life.

A production-scale extraction line is one of the larger capital commitments a processor makes. The question worth sitting with is how much of that decision you are comfortable making on projection rather than proof.

That gap is what a pilot-scale system is for. Two 10-liter vessels, running the full supercritical envelope under automated, recipe-based control, let you work through a process on your own material before a production-size purchase order is ever raised. The question gets answered at pilot cost, not production cost. And for a regulated pharmaceutical or nutraceutical program, the logic carries further, since work done to compliance standards here travels with you into scale-up.

Here’s a look at our CE Certified 2 × 10 Liter Supercritical CO2 Extraction System in action.

If a production decision is on the horizon, there is a case for proving it before you commit. Get in touch with our team to talk through your material and your targets. Email us at [email protected]

Most conversations about product quality start at extraction. A lot of the outcome is already fixed one step earlier, at the dryer.

Uneven moisture, or heat held too high for too long, changes a material before it reaches the next stage. Pockets that are too wet invite instability. Over-drying and excess heat can quietly cost the color, aroma and heat-sensitive compounds that give the product its value. And whatever variation leaves the dryer tends to widen everywhere downstream.

This is what makes drying worth treating as a controlled step rather than a holding one, and it holds true well beyond any single crop. A seven-level dryer that regulates air and residence time is built to bring moisture down evenly while keeping conditions gentle, whether the material is a spice, a herb, a botanical or h**p. Here’s a look at our conveyorized sorting, drying and milling line in action.

If drying consistency has been a constraint across your range, it is worth a closer look. Get in touch with our team to talk through your material and throughput. Email us at [email protected]

Ask two processors running "CO2 extraction" what their terpene profile looks like, and you can get two very different answers. The shorthand hides a real fork in the process: supercritical or subcritical.

It is the same solvent, and solvent-free either way. What changes is what survives the run. Take CO2 past its critical point, and you gain yield and speed, but the most volatile terpenes pay for it under heat and pressure. Hold it below, as a cold liquid, and you keep that fragile top note, at the cost of throughput and time.

Neither regime is the better one in the abstract. The right choice is set by the profile you are trying to protect, and by what happens to the extract once it leaves the vessel.

For anyone working to a specific profile, that is a fork worth settling before the first run, not after. Write to us at [email protected]

A specification on paper and a system running to that specification are two different things. The Factory Acceptance Test is where the second is proven.

Before a system ships, a FAT runs it against its full specification in the manufacturer's facility: pressure held and verified, safety interlocks confirmed, control logic and batch sequences run as they will be in production, and where possible, the output itself demonstrated. The buyer is invited to witness it, to walk the process and see the equipment do exactly what it was designed to do.

For anyone accepting a delivery, that matters. Installation begins from a verified baseline, and acceptance is something seen first-hand rather than taken on trust. A rigorous FAT is one of the clearest signs that a system has been built to be proven, not simply delivered.

If you would like to understand what a thorough Factory Acceptance Test should cover, we are glad to walk you through it.

Throughout or time at Vitafoods Asia 2026, one theme stood out across conversations: the growing demand for scientifically backed, naturally derived ingredients.

From astaxanthin sourced from algae and omega-3 innovations to polyphenol-rich extracts and emerging applications for banana extracts, discussions across the event reflected a shared focus on functionality, sustainability, and ingredient quality.

For Buffalo Extraction Systems, these conversations reinforce the importance of advanced extraction technologies in helping manufacturers unlock valuable bioactives while maintaining consistency, purity, and scalability.

It was a pleasure connecting with researchers, ingredient innovators, manufacturers, and industry leaders from across the region, exchanging ideas on where the nutraceutical and functional ingredient industries are headed next.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with Rohit Shah, our VP – Sales & Business Development (Global Markets), during Vitafoods Asia. We look forward to continuing the conversations.

Asia’s nutraceutical industry is evolving rapidly, and the technologies behind better ingredients and formulations are evolving with it.

Rohit Shah, VP – Sales & Business Development (Global Markets) at Buffalo Extraction Systems, will be attending Vitafoods Asia 2026 in Bangkok from 2nd to 4th September.

Vitafoods Asia brings together leaders across ingredients, dietary supplements, functional foods, natural products and related technologies, making it an important platform for conversations around the future of extraction and ingredient processing.

Rohit will be at Vitafoods Asia to connect with industry leaders, explore emerging opportunities and discuss how advanced extraction technologies can support the development of high-quality botanical, nutraceutical and bioactive ingredients.

When you produce to pharmaceutical or nutraceutical grade, your equipment sits within the scope of your GMP compliance. At an audit, it is examined like anything else on the floor, and whatever it cannot demonstrate becomes something you have to account for.

EU GMP is the standard your site is inspected against, under EudraLex Volume 4. For the equipment within that site, GMP is not a label it carries. It is a set of specific requirements it must satisfy. The system has to be qualified under Annex 15, through design, installation, operation and performance qualification, and it has to arrive with the documentation that proves it. Materials and surface finish that withstand cleaning validation. A design that supports contamination control rather than undermining it.

That is what determines whether the equipment supports you at audit. A system that arrives qualified and documented, with a cleaning regime you can validate. So the right thing to ask a supplier for is not reassurance. It is the paperwork: the qualification package and the cleaning validation evidence that allow your GMP position to hold with their equipment inside it. Built to that standard, the equipment becomes one of the assured parts of your compliance.

In a plant that runs on high pressure and flammable solvent, certifications are never an afterthought. They weigh on every audit, every inspection, and every shift that has to end the way it started.

What is easy to overlook is that a certificate is only ever as sound as the equipment behind it. When the systems on the floor are built to standard, compliance stops being something to defend and becomes something that simply holds.

EU GMP, CE, ASME and ATEX each close a specific operational risk, from audit exposure to pressure integrity to ignition in classified areas. Built in from the start, they stop being something you manage and become something you can rely on.
