The Complete Guide to Bansuri Care: Understanding Its Structure and How It Responds to Climate Change! The bansuri, an ancient transverse edge-blown aerophone, represents a pinnacle of natural acoustic engineering. I explain why the tanpura is an essential part of Dhrupad flute training at Dhrupad Gurukul. The tanpura’s rich overtones help a bansuri student discover precise shrutis and develop a sensitive musical ear. Its steady drone provides a living reference for tuning, breath alignment, and the spacious unfolding of a raga. Plucking the tanpura also cultivates laya and concentration, preparing the mind for the slow, contemplative alap of the Dhrupad tradition.

At Dhrupad Gurukul—teaching both curved bansuri technique and vocal practice through the traditional gurukul method—students learn how a physical tanpura interacts with room acoustics to create the sympathetic resonance digital drones cannot fully reproduce. This practice supports deeper listening and a more three-dimensional musical experience.

A Deeper Understanding of the Flute's Soul A Deeper Understanding of the Flute's Soul

At Dhrupad Gurukul, we present three essential exercises from the Gurukul curriculum that forge the meditative timbre central to Dhrupad: 1) Breath-sustained alaap — practice long, even phrases to shape tone and calm the breath; 2) Meend (glide) drills on the curved bansuri — focus on seamless transitions and microtonal shading; 3) Tala-based drone alignment — use a tanpura or tambura drone to lock pitch and rhythmic pulse. These exercises reflect the school’s combined expertise in flute and vocal training and are suited to beginners and intermediate players in Pune and online.
