Vision: Empowering individuals for a conscious and critical participation in the society

There seems to be a general consensus in the society that education is a right due to every member of the human race. It is, at once, a significant and worrying trend in the world today. Significant, because it holds the promise of creating a just, equal society and worrying, because, we have increasingly ceased to ask the question, “what kind of education?” It is important to reflect on the trends in education/schooling today to see where its ultimate aims lie. Compulsory schooling has come to be equated to learning, an inert curriculum has taken precedence over the role of teachers who facilitate it, a certain hegemonic idea of education as a mere tool for future individual success and fortune has taken precedence over the meaning of education as a means of creating ‘conscious and critical’ participants in our society. These concerns, challenges and hopes form the backdrop of our experiment at Re:Imagine Learning Community - a free, democratic learning space situated at Bhor, Maharashtra.
