The month-long ritual is observed by lighting up the lanterns dedicated to fallen soldiers on the banks of River Ganges in Varanasi. The ritual is observed in the Hindu month of Karthik every year by peoples from all walks of life.

The ritual dates back to the ancient rimes, when it was observed to honour the sacrifices of the dead soldiers in the epic Mahabharata war. But it was rekindled in Varanasi after Kargil war in 1999 with Pakistan.
