IRANomad Tours is a tour operator, especialized in arranging local (specifically nomadic) tours in Iran. It offers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to move with the nomads through mountains in their biannual migration (K***h) or simply stay with them for a while and experience their unique lifestyle. On a beautiful spring day, in 2017, while we were trekking in the wild & untouched Mt. Zagros, we came across a nomadic family on one of the ridges. They were in the middle of their seasonal migration (k***h), and we were on a quest of seeking our roots. Quite overwhelmed by this surprising encounter, the moment they invited us to join their odyssey, we had no doubt that this was what we’d longed for. Ever since we heard about nomads, the indigenous people of Iran, we wanted to see them for ourselves and now they were our very hosts! For the following 3 days, it was like we were out of this world; we were blessed with heavenly weather, clear skies and a gentle breeze, tasty organic food, living with the most authentic nomads, and experiencing the most natural, harmonized life. However, something that was even more important & thought-provoking for us was the supposedly happy future the young men of the family were imagining for themselves if they’d abandon their nomadic life and move to the cities (especially Tehran, the capital).
– What if I sell my herd of livestock and move to Tehran? Can I work in your office? Cleaning or serving tea?
+ But why not stay here? What you’re doing is precious and worth keeping, don’t you think? This conversation and some similar ones that we had with the nomads were like a wake-up call; A moment of epiphany that brought us a novel idea. For years, we’d been working on rural development projects, but on that specific day a deeper understanding occurred to us: Our nomads who were once proud of their lives, were thinking of abandoning their lifestyle and leaving our national heritage behind! That’s when the idea of empowering them occurred to us. "With Nomads We Found Our True Vocation"
Back in Tehran, for weeks, we were all contemplating & consulting anthropologists and other related specialists worldwide to find out how we could help preserve one of Iran’s main cultural heritages. Finally, we came up with a social business idea: IRANomad Tours, to benefit both the nomads & adventure-culture travelers. Now, we are almost certain that our true calling is preserving our nomadic heritage through sustainable tourism. "Our Lifelong Nomadic Odyssey"
Our odyssey is still going on and we continue to be on it as long as the nomads do. Instead of the vast sea & a beaten boat in Greek Odyssey though, there is this mighty Mt. Zagros in an ancient Persian soil, herds of livestock, children of Zagros, and us. We, IRANomad Tours, the first sustainable nomadic tour operator in Iran, try our best in:

IRANomad is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering Iran’s local (specifically Zagros pastoral) communities and building complementary, sustainable livelihoods through culturally rooted tourism. Founded in spring 2018, IRANomad hopes to reframe seasonal migration (k***h)—the centuries-old movement of pastoralists between summer and winter pastures—as a new, low-impact destination for experiential travel. Grounded in consultations with anthropologists and ethnographers, the venture treats k***h as a living practice whose continuity depends on local agency, fair income, and respectful host–guest relations.

In northern Iran, a bull is known as “Varzā.” Since ancient times, the people of this land have practiced a powerful and time-honored tradition called “Varzā Jang”—literally, the War of the Bulls. In this ritual contest, two mighty bulls were brought forward by their owners and set face to face, each embodying strength, pride, and honor.
Of all the laws that governed this ancient combat, one stood above all others: both bulls had to enter the arena at the exact same moment. To guard this sacred rule, seasoned and watchful men surrounded the field, their eyes fixed on the threshold of battle, ensuring that neither bull crossed it a heartbeat before the other.
And this was no small detail.
In Persian, “vatan” means homeland. It was believed that if a bull set foot in the arena even an instant too soon, it would claim the ground as its vatan. From that moment on, the arena was no longer just soil—it became sacred land. The bull would fight not merely to win, but to defend its homeland, battling with unwavering fury and resolve, until it stood victorious, alive and unbroken, upon the field.
This was the very first lesson I learned in my Iranian Studies class.

Some journeys feel familiar, not because you’ve been there before—but because the place welcomes you like an old friend.
This time, it was Dimitris from Greece, returning to Iran for the second time, choosing once again to travel with us at Iranomad Tours.

Mohammad Baqer, a Bakhtiari nomad man who embodies the spirit of the nomad—rooted in tradition yet ever-moving, a solitary figure against the vastness of the mountains, carrying with him the legacy of a life lived in harmony with the wild.
He had traversed these mountains for decades, knowing every hidden path and secret glade. The mountains are not just his home; they are a part of him, as much as the sheep that follow him closely, trusting in his guidance.
His weathered face, etches with lines of wisdom and experience, tells stories of countless seasons spent under the open sky. Dressed in a tattered cloak that has seen better days, he moved with a quiet grace, each step deliberate and sure.
