“Equinox” brings together a distinctly minor character with an open, spacious feel.

Built around a minor structure with the 4th degree left out, Equinox creates more space between its melodic possibilities, giving it a sound that can feel introspective without becoming too heavy

Play it slowly, and its reflective side comes forward. Add rhythm and movement, and the scale opens into a more flowing, expressive character.

In this video, we’re exploring E Equinox as part of our ongoing SEW Scale Guide series.

This reel offers a small glimpse of its sound.

Ep. 7 | SEW Scale Guide 📖

After exploring D Kurd, Ashakiran, Romanian Hijaz, Aegean, Pygmy and Amara, our journey through the world of handpan scales continues.

Meet “Equinox” ✨

Equinox is a hexatonic scale, built around six different notes per octave. Its minor character can feel dreamy and introspective, while still leaving space for lighter, more open expressions.

One of its most interesting features is its structure: compared to the natural minor scale, Equinox leaves out the 4th degree. And while we call it a “six-note scale”, an Equinox handpan can have many more tone fields, with the same notes repeating across different octaves.

In this guide, you’ll discover:

• What gives Equinox its distinctive character
• What “six-note scale” actually means
• How its notes can expand across different octaves
• What we notice when playing and exploring it

Our journey through handpan scales continues, one guide at a time.

Closely related to the natural minor scale, its classic structure leaves out the 6th degree, creating more space while preserving its expressive minor character.

Play it slowly, and Amara can feel reflective and intimate. Add rhythm and movement, and a lighter, more dynamic side begins to emerge.

In this video, we’re exploring E Amara as part of our ongoing SEW Scale Guide series.

“Pygmy” has a way of making even simple patterns feel immersive.

Deep, soulful and hypnotic, this scale is built around a pentatonic core that gives its notes a natural sense of space and flow.

Play it slowly, let the notes resonate, and its deeper, more introspective side emerges.
Add rhythm and repetition, and the same scale can create movement while keeping its distinctive hypnotic character.

In this video, we’re playing our F Pygmy 18 | Opera at 440Hz.

Ep. 4 | SEW Scale Guide 📖

After exploring D Kurd, Ashakiran and Romanian Hijaz, we continue our journey through the world of handpan scales with one that brings a brighter, more open character.

Meet “Aegean”

Bright, uplifting and cinematic, this scale stands out for its spacious sound and natural melodic flow.

One of its most distinctive qualities is the way its notes leave room within the scale. Rather than constantly pulling melodies toward an obvious resolution, Aegean can feel open and suspended, giving musical phrases space to unfold.

Play it slowly and leave space between the notes, and its dreamy, floating side comes forward.
Add movement and flowing melodies, and its uplifting, cinematic character begins to shine.

In this guide, you’ll discover:

• What gives Aegean its open, distinctive sound
• Why players are drawn to its flowing character
• What to expect when playing it
• How its mood can change with the way you play
