🚄🇬🇧🇨🇭 London to the Swiss Alps by direct Eurostar? It could soon become a reality! 🚅

Eurostar is exploring plans for a direct train service between London St Pancras and Switzerland, potentially connecting London with Geneva, Zurich and Basel without the need to change trains in Paris.

If the project goes ahead, journey times could be around:

🇨🇭 London → Basel: ~5 hours
🇨🇭 London → Geneva: ~5.5 hours
🇨🇭 London → Zurich: ~6 hours

The proposed service would offer travelers a comfortable alternative to flying, with spacious seating, generous luggage allowances, onboard cafés and power outlets — while taking you directly from the UK towards the Swiss Alps. 🏔️🚆

However, the project is still in its early planning stages. Changes to border controls, infrastructure and international agreements would need to be addressed before the service could become a reality.

And don’t expect to book your ticket just yet… 👀
If everything progresses, a London–Switzerland Eurostar service would likely not launch until the 2030s.

The FS Group is taking another major step in expanding high-speed rail across Europe, with an order for 19 new trains for Trenitalia France.

🇬🇧 Future Paris–London service planned for 2029
👷 Around 2,000 jobs expected across France, Italy and the UK

The new fleet will bring a completely redesigned passenger experience, including:

📶 Next-generation Wi-Fi up to 10 Gbps
🍽️ A new bistro concept and enhanced catering
🪑 Redesigned interiors across all service classes
♻️ Up to 97.1% recyclability

The investment also includes the development of the Maisons-Alfort Pompadour maintenance facility near Paris, supporting the expansion of Trenitalia’s European operations.

🚆 Could You Soon Travel from Scotland to Europe by Sleeper Train? 🌍🌙

The Scottish Government has launched a feasibility study to explore the possibility of extending the Caledonian Sleeper beyond the UK and into mainland Europe.

A new working group, including Transport Scotland, Scottish Rail Holdings, and Caledonian Sleeper, will examine whether direct overnight services from Scotland to Europe could become a reality. The study will assess the technical, operational, and commercial challenges involved, with findings expected later this year.

While the idea of boarding a train in Scotland and waking up in a European city is exciting, there are significant hurdles to overcome, including:

🚄 Access to the Channel Tunnel
🌍 Cross-border safety certification and international agreements
🚆 Multi-system rolling stock capable of operating across several countries
🛂 Border control and security arrangements
🔧 Maintenance facilities and operational logistics
💷 A strong business case to compete with airlines and existing rail services

At this stage, no routes, destinations, or launch dates have been announced. The project is still in its feasibility phase, and any future international sleeper service would require close cooperation between multiple governments, railway operators, and infrastructure managers across Europe.

If successful, it could offer travelers a comfortable, lower-carbon alternative to flying while strengthening rail connections between Scotland and mainland Europe.
