Computer Vision & Multimedia Lab - Pavia
The group's initial research activities concentrated on image enhancement and restoration techniques, with a particular focus on medical imagery.
The group of the Computer Vision and Multimedia Laboratory (CVML) is active in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Pavia since the early 70s. The Computer Vision and Multimedia Laboratory (CVML) has been active in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Pavia since the early 70s. Subsequently, the group's main efforts have been devoted to more advanced image processing functions, involving scene segmentation and shape characterization; a broad background has been acquired on low-level and intermediate-level vision tasks involving grey-level statistics and structural descriptions. Since the early 80s a new stream of research has been actively followed in the field of parallel architectures for vision and image processing. The group has meanwhile developed skills in high-level image processing domains, such as the management of knowledge description and learning capabilities for vision tasks.

We are delighted to share that our team from the CVML lab recently participated in ETFA 2026 — the 31st IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation — held in Västerås, Sweden, from September 8th to 11th, 2026!
Marco Porta was Program co-chair and Hoàng Nam Lê (PhD student at University of Pavia - Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering) presented our latest research paper titled:
📄 Detecting Random-Like Human Behavior via Eye Tracking: A Deterministic Labeling and Sequence Modeling Approach
co-authored by Lê, Amiri, Dondi, and Porta.
IEEE ETFA is a forum focusing on the latest advancements in industrial automation, smart manufacturing, and human-technology interaction. Our paper introduces a novel method combining deterministic gaze-labeling techniques with sequence modeling to identify non-systematic, random-like human eye movements—a key step toward enhancing user attention analysis and safety monitoring in automated industrial environments.
It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas with global experts at the intersection of computer vision, human-computer interaction, and smart automation.
A big thank you to the organizers and everyone who engaged with our presentation!

We are proud to share that Hoàng Nam Lê (PhD student at University of Pavia - Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering) represented our laboratory at IJCB 2026, the IEEE/IAPR International Joint Conference on Biometrics, held in Rome from September 1–4, 2026, where he presented our latest research on gaze-driven biometric verification.
The conference provided a great opportunity to exchange ideas with researchers and professionals working at the forefront of biometric technologies.
The paper “Gaze-Driven Biometric Verification with Moving Text Stimuli”, authored by Hoàng Nam Lê, Davide Marco Mascheroni, Emanuel Aldea, Piercarlo Dondi, and Marco Porta, opens up interesting perspectives for more natural and unobtrusive biometric authentication.
A great experience of scientific exchange, discussion, and collaboration in the beautiful setting of Rome!
