Restate sintonizzati.

🤍 October at the Byron and Risorgimento Museums

October is a time for redisplays. The Museum returns to its original configuration after five rotations, necessary to allow the works on paper to enjoy a year of rest.
Do you remember? One more reason to return and rediscover the spaces as they were originally conceived, in their most authentic light.

This month also brings a surprise. An exceptional Guest has engaged with the power of the ideas of which Byron was an extraordinary interpreter and undisputed prophet, a man capable of casting his heart into Modernity. The result is a vibrant dialogue that moves through the Museum’s rooms and memories, reawakening connections and raising new questions.

This is the surprise we have in store for you this October.
Stay tuned.

A Treasure Chest of Love ❤️

A small woven basket made to safeguard the threads of the heart.
On its lid, the inlaid coats of arms of Attilia Roverella and Ignazio Guiccioli — parents of Count Alessandro, who in his third marriage wed the young Countess Teresa Gamba — tell the story of the Guiccioli family lineage.

Through the marriage, the basket came into Teresa’s possession, and she would use it to keep Byron’s letters. And so this little basket — this intimate treasure chest — became the repository of something precious, something to be carefully preserved. The very act of safeguarding it becomes an act of consecration, a gesture of remembrance.

It is no coincidence that the Museum revolves around relics imbued with memory, objects that become true semiophores, capable of carrying meanings across time.

The Fire of Revolution Marches into the Battle of Arcole

🔥 Commissioned by Bonaparte himself, Gros’s celebrated portrait — and the prints derived from it — immortalises him as a Republican hero: flag in hand, sabre at his side, leading his troops like an ordinary officer. A daring gesture, a powerful image. Napoleon throws himself onto the bridge at Arcole like a son of the Revolution. That bridge was not merely a battlefield, but the stage on which his legend began.

Parola a Lord Byron

🖋️«Ungrateful Florence! Dante sleeps afar,
Like Scipio, buried by the upbraiding shore:
Thy factions, in their worse than civil war
Proscribed the Bard...»

— Byron, Childe Harold, IV, 57–59

In Lord Byron’s Words

🖋️ «Ungrateful Florence! Dante sleeps afar,
Like Scipio, buried by the upbraiding shore:
Thy factions, in their worse than civil war
Proscribed the Bard...»

— Byron, Childe Harold, IV, 57–59

In the verses of Childe Harold, Byron evokes Dante as the great Exile of Literature. In these lines, written before his arrival in Ravenna, an epic tension can already be felt: Dante becomes a model of greatness born from a wound.

It is a premonition.

One poet contemplates another and, without realising it, follows in his footsteps: exile as fate, distance as a place of truth.

When Byron arrives in Ravenna — and meets Teresa Guiccioli — that premonition will become destiny. Here, his identification with Dante will no longer be merely literary, but profoundly existential.

And so, what was intuition in Childe Harold is fulfilled: the new Exile sees himself reflected in the great Exile, and the city that welcomed Dante will also welcome Byron, sealing a bond that belongs equally to history and literature.

🔥Una parola che corre, brucia, ritorna

Esilio.
Dal latino ex‑solum, “fuori dal suolo”.
Fuori dalla terra che ti ha generato.
Fuori dal luogo che ti ha tradito.
Fuori da ciò che eri.

Dante lo vive come ferita.
Byron lo sceglie come destino.
Da Ponte lo cavalca come rinascita.

E l’esilio corre, cambia ritmo.

🔥 A word that travels, burns, returns

Exile.
From the Latin ex-solum, “away from one’s soil.”
Away from the land that gave you birth.
Away from the place that betrayed you.
Away from what you once were.

Dante experiences it as a wound.
Byron chooses it as a destiny.
Da Ponte embraces it as a rebirth.

And exile moves on, changing its rhythm.
It has the hurried pace of those who cannot stop.
The short breath of those searching for a new centre.
The slanting light of those who look at the world from its margins.

On 18 September, at the Byron and Risorgimento Museums, we tell the story of a word that crosses the centuries like an arrow: exile that creates poetry, exile that ignites revolutions, exile that invents new lives.

A journey that begins with a single step away from one’s native soil.

Parola a Lord Byron

— Byron, Don Juan, canto III, 105

–

🖋️«Sweet hour of Twilight! – in the Solitude Of the Pine forest, and the silent Shore Which bounds Ravenna’s immemorial wood.»

— Byron, Don Juan, canto III, 105

Two men separated by time, one shared landscape. The pine forest becomes a secret passage where exile is transformed into literary destiny. Dante foresees it. Byron deciphers it. And today, we can still feel its breath.

Less than a century later, Luigi Rava, a native of Ravenna, recognised in that pine forest a literary landscape belonging to the heritage of the Nation. His initiative led to Law No. 411 of 16 July 1905, the celebrated Rava Law: the first act of the Italian State devoted to the protection of an environmental and landscape heritage.

The place that had preserved prophecy and poetry became a heritage to protect. The landscape preserves literary memory; the law preserves the Landscape.

Such is the power of the Divine Forest!

Settembre 1819

A Ravenna.

September 1819

A summer retreat that has consumed him.
Byron is staying between Ravenna and Bologna, as a guest of the Guicciolis. Officially, he is there to attend upon the Countess. In truth, he is there to live out a love that begins, like that of Paolo and Francesca, with talk of Dante—allowing literature to open passages, kindle fires, shape destinies.

Then comes The Prophecy of Dante, a poem encouraged by Teresa and written in a burst of inspiration, over the course of just a few days. A work that invokes freedom. Summer is drawing to a close. It is time to return to Venice.
But his heart has found a home. in Ravenna.

September 1819: Time to Return

After a summer spent between Ravenna, Filetto and Bologna, Byron prepares to return. It is September 1819: his official residence is still in the lagoon city, where his house, horses, servants and correspondence with his publishers await him.

In Romagna, however, Byron has just experienced the season that will change his life: his encounter with Teresa Guiccioli, the young countess who welcomes him into her family circle and introduces him to the custom of the cavalier servente, a role Byron embraces with surprising ease while refusing to accept its limitations.

His return to Venice is the last point of resistance in a life that is about to shift, slowly but definitively, towards Romagna.
The end of a summer that has opened the way to new horizons.
