Laboratory Security and Safety Best Practices for Modern Labs 18/04/2025

The article from Labmanager.com discusses the importance of laboratory security with Robert Emery, expert in lab health and safety with more than 40 years of experience, emphasizing the need for those in charge to understand and address the complexity of potential risks. It highlights the difference between safety, which focuses on preventing unintentional harm, and security, which deals with intentional threats such as sabotage and theft. The article underscores the increasing concern about insider threats, including malicious, coerced, and unwitting insiders, and suggests including routine questions about security concerns during lab inspections. It also touches on the importance of chemical inventory management, monitoring access logs, and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in connected lab equipment. The article concludes by offering practical steps for lab leaders to enhance both safety and security, fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility to protect personnel, research, and reputation.

The Diversity Drive 15/03/2024

Diversity is an essential quality for excellence in medical laboratories. Pathologists and lab scientists play a crucial role to shape the culture inside a laboratory where different backgrounds and skills converge for a final result , starting with strategic recruitment from diverse talent pools and mentorship programs. Cultural competence training ensures equitable patient care.

Beyond the lab, some organizations lead diversity initiatives, partnering with educational platforms and medical groups to promote inclusion. It's an effort, requiring sustained commitment from every lab member.

Celebrating diversity isn't just about ethics—it's about advancing medical science and ensuring the best care for all.

The Value of ‘Lessons Learned’ in the Lab 15/12/2023

In the world of high-performing laboratory organizations, the pursuit of excellence is a constant factor. driving force. However, One powerful tool at their disposal is the "lessons learned" approach; a structured conversation designed to evaluate successes, failures, and opportunities for future growth.

At its core, the concept of lessons learned is a reflective process aimed at discerning what worked and what didn't in a project. This exercise hinges on answering five questions:

1.What did we expect to happen?
2.What actually happened?
3. What worked well?
4. What was unexpected?
5. How could we do things differently?

While seemingly simple, these questions provoke nuanced and sometimes controversial answers.

Here are some key concepts to ensure the maximum value is extracted from this approach:

1.Establish Clear Purpose:
2.Avoid the Blame Game: Emphasize that the meeting is not a witch hunt. The aim is improvement, not assigning blame.
3.Consider Individual Perspectives:
4.Articulate Value (clearly communicate the benefits for the team)

Anyway, keep in mind that challenges may arise during lessons learned sessions.

So keep in mind these pivotal concepts:

1.Remind participants of the intended goals of the meeting, emphasizing constructive outcomes.
2. Pay attention to body language, it is often more useful than words
3.Use Inclusive Language
4.Avoid Accusatory Language
5.Clarify Misinterpretations
6. Focus on objective observations and facts.
7.Allow team members to share their perspectives openly
8. Call a Timeout (especially if tensions rise)

Remember, Trust is the bedrock of successful collaboration and innovation within any team.
a follow-up (better if detailed) is necessary for this type of activity

lesson-learned is a necessary tool for every leader, but it must be used with caution because it risks discussions that can turn into acrimony towards the leader or between group members, but if managed well it certainly leads to a high level of performance and mutual help in the working environment.

The Value of ‘Lessons Learned’ in the Lab Lessons learned conversations create a safe space for everyone to be heard and help identify successes and areas for improvement

75 years of improving public health 07/04/2023

April 7 is World Health Day (WHD), i.e. the world day concerning awareness of the importance of health.
The WHD is celebrated on 7 April which is the anniversary of the founding of the WHO (born on 7 April 1948).
Health for all is the keyword of this day and the goal that the WHO has set itself since its foundation.
World Health Day is essential to share awareness about health problems, research progress and the progress of the WHO itself, as well as the fact that a healthy population is a factor of development for the whole world.

75 years of improving public health WHO’s 75th anniversary year is an opportunity to look back at public health successes that have improved quality of life during the last seven decades.

How motivational interviewing can improve health workforce well-being 28/10/2022

Burnout is a topic that we have already covered in our posts, the National Academy of Medicine in USA has launched its National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being.

Often we have talked about the damage caused by burnout and its causes, but rarely we have talked about how certain motivational factors can lead (or not lead) to burnout the health workforce.

Sarah Stimson produced her Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and it is interesting to note that when dealing with changes in the present (which can lead to burnout) there are a number of characteristics:

-Ambivalence is high
-Confidence is low
-Desire is low
-Importance is low

We often see that there is a lack of confidence in positive change, health workforce is always a category under pressure, covid-19 has shown how certain changes can be rapid, negative but also positive (think of a reorganization of activities, dissemination of knowledge or reduction of bureaucratic burdens).

the healthcare sector is complex and its workforce experiences different situations but also manages to be a brilliant, creative work and a remarkable collective strength, in this sense it has been noted how often it has been noted that good relationships between peers can be an antidote to burnout and an improvement in well-being for the category.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, burnout rates in the health workforce increased and this unfortunately produced worse results in patient care (in addition to the damage suffered by burnout victims).

How motivational interviewing can improve health workforce well-being The National Academy of Medicine's National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being offers 142 possible action steps across seven priority areas. Pick one. Find a partner(s). Strengthen your relationships and activate change.

What are the Six Key Components of a Safe Lab? 23/09/2022

In the management of a laboratory we can identify 6 safety components which are: risk, leadership, culture, habits / rituals, compliants and training / learning.

-Risk: it exists, you have to learn to live with it and find measures to make it as unlikely as possible. Each person perceives it in a different way, to find a unitary and understandable protocol.

Leaders:
in a laboratory, as in other contexts, people follow the leader for how he acts and for his example more for what he says; it is a simple concept but not easy to pursue. The example and actions of a group leader can be much more effective than words.

-Culture:
The culture within a laboratory will prevail over the strategy, so care must be taken that the safety culture is an integral part of the strategy and that it is well received by everyone,

-Habits / Rituals:
old habits die hard, pay attention to the spread of bad habits, they must be prevented and changed in time, for the good of all.

-Compliace:
at first impression it may seem like a boring idea or concept, but in reality it is fundamental for our safety and beyond, so especially at the design level it is something that should never be overlooked.

-Training / Learning: An organization constantly in training and learning is an organization destined for success, in this case even mistakes can become opportunities to improve, having this mindset is necessary to always have excellent results.
