Alicja Pakosz (b. 1996, Tychy, Poland) is a Kraków-based artist working in painting and its spatial extensions through installations and dioramas. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, she is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Doctoral School of the University of the Commission of National Education in Kraków. Her artistic practice revolves around the politics of memory and national identity, an interest that grew out of curiosity about her Upper Silesian family history. Through a regular practice of painting on paper in the familiar A4 format, she builds a personal archive of motifs, ideas, and narratives. Selected works from this archive are translated into larger-scale paintings on canvas or reinterpreted in other media, such as
dioramas. Her subversive use of the diorama draws on its historical association with museums of natural, national, and cultural history - institutions that play a significant role in shaping collective identity.

“Paintings usually take time. You might finish some in a few days, but for me, it takes weeks or months. It is warm June now, but I painted these during the cold season. Maybe you can tell, maybe not. I found some autumn leaves outside the studio, brought them inside, and painted them scattered on white paper. I often buy fish at a nearby market to arrange still lifes - trouts, sea basses, and prawns. I painted one contemplating prawn over an imaginary seascape. I create these scenes, imagine the sea, or just paint what catches my eye, like Martyna’s violet shoes lying around in her next-door studio.”
