In September 2024, before the cameras started rolling, we joined the Sea-Watch aboard the Aurora with lead actors Louis Hofmann and Maria-Victoria Drăguș for a training session at sea.
Experiencing the reality of sea rescue firsthand wasn’t just research, it was essential to understanding the weight, urgency, and human reality of the narrative.
Through performance, cinema has the power to do more than just depict: it becomes a tool to restore dignity to real, lived experiences and to the people who carry them.

An extract from the three-day training in Malta with Barbara Santos and Michele Cinque for 23,000 Lives.
More than 200 performers took part in the extraordinary process, bringing their faces, emotions and strength to the film.
Drawing on Barbara Santos’ experience with the Theatre of the Oppressed and the insights of people who had crossed the Mediterranean themselves, we explored how personal experience could become a powerful expressive tool.
Over three days, we worked to bring the emotions the film required to the screen, creating a space where those carrying memories of Libya and the sea crossing could share them safely. Experiences so often associated only with pain became part of a collective creative process.
Together, we developed a new protocol aimed not only at preparing performers, but also at restoring dignity to lived experience through the act of performance itself.
