MHPC - Master in High Performance Computing at Sissa-ICTP

Condividi

MHPC coursework is driven by challenging scientific and technical problems that require an HPC approach. Official website: www.ictp.it

The MHPC aims to create a group of experts who have the hands-on training and skills needed to fill the gap between the dynamic environments in IT and research/science. Lectures are provided by SISSA and ICTP staff and highly recognized international experts. Both institutes have long histories and experience in developing and applying scientific and research computation models. SISSA and ICTP host one of the largest HPC facilities in Italy, and it will be available to MHPC students. SISSA - International School for Advanced Studies

SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies, was founded in 1978 and is a scientific center of excellence within the national and international academic scene. Located in Italy, in the city of Trieste, it features about 65 professors, approximately 100 post-docs and 250 PhD students. The three main research areas of SISSA are Physics, Neuroscience and Mathematics. Official website: www.sissa.it

ICTP - Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics

Founded in 1964 by the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP is the first global institution for fundamental research and development focussing on developing countries. ICTP provides a rich, international environment conducive to the highest levels of scientific inquiry, supporting research and education in theoretical and applied physics and mathematics.

From data to machine.

Today we wrap up Data Structures and Algorithms: modern Fortran, sorting, searching, and how the way we organize data shapes performance.

Tomorrow we open the hood with Introduction to Computer Architecture for HPC. What is the CPU really doing with our code? How do we make it faster, and how do we start thinking in parallel?

Can HPC improve bureaucracy?

🇮🇹 Giulio Dondi’s thesis focused on the digitalization and optimization of the Italian land registry (Catasto). Proof that the technical skills from this course are essential for making public services more efficient.

Ever wondered what it actually takes to become an HPC expert? 💡

We’re kicking off a new series to give you an inside look at the MHPC curriculum: 25 courses divided into core foundations, advanced HPC applications, and a final research thesis.

First up: Scientific Programming Environment

In this course, our students build the foundation of their technical workflow—mastering Unix-like operating systems, bash scripting, version control, code maintenance, debugging techniques, build systems, and cluster usage. All paired with hands-on practice in C.

Building high-performance software starts with mastering the environment. 💻

Why use one core when you can use thousands?
🚀 Parallelization is the art of breaking down a complex problem into smaller parts executed simultaneously.

It’s the core of MHPC: we teach you to "think in parallel" to push past the limits of serial computing.

How does the Earth move? 🌋

One of our top theses focused on the parallelization of seismic wave simulators. Thanks to HPC, we can simulate earthquakes in real-time to improve infrastructure safety.

With US science facing significant uncertainty, Europe aims to position itself as the new global benchmark for free and open research.

But are democratic values enough to compete with the budgets of the US and China? A recent analysis by examines funding, fragmentation among member states, and the unresolved challenge of industrial innovation.

The race is on: will Europe transform into a science superpower, or will it remain trapped in its own bureaucracy? 🧪🇪🇺
