Forty years ago, countries came together to stop the destruction of the ozone layer under the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

That global commitment led to the Montreal Protocol, one of the most successful environmental agreements in history, which phased out nearly all ozone-depleting substances and is expected to help prevent up to 1°C of global warming by the end of the century.

As a result, the ozone layer began to heal, and these efforts became a model for global environmental action.

Yet, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), once designed to replace ozone-depleting agents, are still a major threat since they are highly potent greenhouse gases that exacerbate the climate crisis.

By eliminating HFCs through the Kigali Amendment, which marks 10 years, countries can avoid up to 0.5°C of temperature rise by the end of this century and show how science can drive global change .
