We are concerned about electoral violence, voter intimidation, voter bribery, and the misuse of public resources ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. These developments fall short of the standards set by the Constitution. Electoral management bodies and other institutions that support election management must ensure that this poll reflects the sovereign will of the people.

As Kenya prepares for United Nations tax convetion in August, civil society leaders warn that the nation’s efforts to fund public services are undermined by international tax rules that favor wealthier countries.

Domestic reforms, they say, are not enough without changes to the global system.

At a meeting in Nairobi this week, experts said that proposed changes under the UN tax convention could force Kenya to revisit its tax agreements with other countries, but much remains uncertain. The lack of clarity leaves officials and businesses in limbo.

Civil society groups pressed for fairer taxing rights for developing countries, action against illicit financial flows, and stricter enforcement to ensure wealthy individuals and corporations contribute more.

Participants agreed that building local capacity and improving cooperation between government and civil society are critical for any reforms to succeed. Kenya’s tax base continues to erode as foreign firms offer services but pay little tax, often shielded by old treaties.
