We recently had an engaging session with our Code Club teachers from Kibera, creating an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made so far and assess the impact of our work.

Together, we looked at what is working well, the challenges we are experiencing, and the areas where we need to improve to make our Code Clubs more effective and impactful.

These conversations are important because strong Code Clubs are built through continuous learning, collaboration, and support for the teachers who make them possible.

We are committed to strengthening our approach, addressing gaps, and creating better learning experiences that inspire young people to develop digital skills, creativity, and confidence.

“Don’t leave the room without the room knowing who you are.”

If there was one sentence we could take away from last week’s career session, it would probably be this one.

Our participants spent the day with Prisca Nyambura, an HR professional with 15+ years of experience, learning about CVs, cover letters, emails and interviews.

But the session went beyond writing a CV.

It was about knowing yourself well enough to talk about your skills and experience with confidence.

We learned that your CV should tell a recruiter what you can do — and give them enough reason to want to know more. We talked about keeping it relevant, backing up your skills with actual experience, being mindful of ATS when applying online, and leaving out information that doesn't add value.

When we moved to interviews, Prisca reminded us to do our homework. Know the organisation. Know the role. Ask questions. Greet everyone. Pay attention to how you present yourself.

And perhaps one of the biggest reminders: don't wait for someone else to tell you what makes you valuable. Know it yourself.

We're grateful to Prisca for giving our participants an honest and practical look into what employers look for — and for offering to help them revamp their CVs at no cost.

A very worthwhile session. ❤️

This week at Oasis Mathare, we had a special hands-on skill session where participants from Oasis Mathare and women from our Inua Binti programme had the opportunity to learn the art of string art.

Our visiting facilitator, Thiyagu Chandrasegaran, from Sri Lanka, guided the participants through the process, sharing his skills and creativity while encouraging everyone to try something new.

Beyond creating beautiful pieces of art, sessions like these provide an opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence, express creativity, and learn from one another.

We are grateful to Chan for sharing his time and skills with our participants. It is through these moments of learning, connection, and exchange that we continue to create opportunities for growth.

A day of Career Development Planning.
One of the questions we asked was, “What did you want to be when you were growing up?”
It was interesting hearing the different answers and seeing how some of those childhood dreams have changed, while others are still very much part of the picture.
From there, we started looking at career planning in a more practical way from understanding where we are, exploring different career opportunities, making decisions and, most importantly, thinking about the steps we can take to get where we want to go.
We also talked about the different pathways available, whether that's through education and training, paid employment or self-employment. The goal was to help everyone see that there isn't only one way to build a career.
And because we can't have a session without a little fun 😂, we had a career guessing game where everyone had a random career written on their back and had to move around asking each other questions and looking for clues to figure out what they had.
We ended by thinking about our goals for the next 1, 5 and 10 years — not just career goals, but also personal and community goals.
We really enjoyed seeing the conversations, the laughter and the different ideas that came out of the session.
Career planning doesn't mean having your whole life figured out. Sometimes it simply starts with knowing where you are, being open to possibilities and taking the next step.

Teachers’ Training in Progress!

We are preparing teachers for our new Code Club , equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to create engaging and supportive learning experiences for young people.

During the training, teachers are exploring:

Introduction to Code Club – understanding the Code Club approach and its purpose.
Learner-Centred Code Clubs – creating spaces where learners take an active role in exploring, creating, and solving problems.
Safeguarding – ensuring safe, inclusive, and supportive environments for every learner.
Hands-on Scratch Programming – learning through practical activities and building their own Scratch projects.

We believe that confident and well-prepared teachers are key to creating Code Club where young people can learn, create, experiment, and build confidence through technology.

The journey to inspire the next generation of digital creators starts with empowering those who guide them.

At our Code Clubs, learning is not about simply following instructions or memorising information. It is about giving learners the freedom to explore, ask questions, make mistakes, solve problems, and create.

We believe every learner has unique strengths, ideas, and potential. That is why our sessions are designed to be learner-centred giving young people the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and build confidence along the way.

From writing their first lines of code to developing creative projects, learners are encouraged to experiment, collaborate, and think critically.

The goal is not just to teach coding. It is to help young people develop the confidence, creativity, problem-solving skills, and curiosity they need to shape their own futures.

When learners are given the space to lead, create, and discover, they don't just learn technology .They discover what they are capable of.

Real transformation does not begin with a skill. It begins with self-belief, self-awareness, and the courage to ask, “Where am I, and where do I want to go?”

That is where our Inua Binti journey began.

During the week of the programme, we deliberately slowed down before moving forward. Rather than immediately focusing on skills training, we created space for our participants to understand themselves — to recognise their strengths, confront their challenges, identify opportunities, and begin imagining what is possible for their lives.

Through self-discovery exercises, SWOT analysis, and goal-setting sessions, participants started turning hopes into clear aspirations and aspirations into goals. We explored financial habits and personal branding, helping them understand that creating opportunities is only part of the journey. Being prepared to recognise, pursue, and make the most of those opportunities is equally important.

But perhaps the most powerful part of these three days was not found in any exercise or presentation.

It was found in the conversations.

In the questions that challenged assumptions. In the honest reflections. In the moments of realisation. In the courage to acknowledge both strengths and weaknesses. And in the growing belief that a different future is possible.

This is what Inua Binti is about.

It is about creating a foundation from which young women can grow with confidence, make informed choices, build sustainable livelihoods, and take greater ownership of their futures.

Because sustainable change does not happen overnight. And it does not begin from the outside.

It starts within.

Three days down. One week complete. And we are only beginning to see what these women are capable of.

The journey continues.
