In the darkness of the depths. To counter the total obscurity that reigns over the depths of the oceans, the blue lacquer dial of the Deepsea features the Chromalight display. This display uses an exclusive luminescent material that makes it easy to read the time in any environment.

At the heart of the Annual Calendar Ref. 5035 is the self-winding caliber 315 S QA, featuring the world's first annual calendar mechanism, patented on March 1, 1996. Bridging the gap between simple and perpetual calendars, this almost entirely rotary movement uses a series of low maintenance wheels and pinions instead of delicate cams and springs.

To automatically adjust for 30- and 31-day months, engineers added two superimposed 'finger' pieces to a central 24-hour wheel to control the date advances. Developed using plexiglass models to test the mechanism, this groundbreaking caliber requires manual correction just once a year – on March 1st.

The Deepsea artfully combines 18ct yellow gold and shades of blue. The compression ring is made from blue ceramic, a technical innovation that marked a new way of integrating this material into the watch case. The helium escape valve, which works to protect the integrity of the watch during decompression, is manufactured in RLX titanium.

At the 1996 Basel Fair, Patek Philippe debuted the Annual Calendar Ref. 5035, introducing the groundbreaking annual calendar mechanism – a 'useful complication' requiring only one adjustment per year.

An idea conceived after the quartz crisis by the company president at the time, Philippe Stern, the watch was designed to bridge the gap between time-only models and Grand Complications. 'We need to offer a more accessible option…we must innovate,' he said.

To bring his idea to life, Mr. Stern tasked students at the Geneva School of Engineering to create the mechanism using a simple, rotary-based calendar. The result was a masterpiece that was pivotal in the company's history.
