AUB University Libraries join members of the Modern Heritage Observatory (MoHO) in calling for urgent action to protect South Lebanon’s cultural heritage.

The statement highlights the need to safeguard historic villages, heritage buildings, cultural sites, archives, libraries, and oral traditions through coordinated local and international efforts.

Pick of the Month | July Edition

This month, we highlight State Failure in Lebanon: Causes and Implications by Ohannes Geukjian, Associate Professor of Comparative Politics and Conflict Resolution at AUB.

The book examines why Lebanon’s political system has struggled to build a strong, cohesive, and legitimate state. It looks at sectarian power-sharing, institutional weakness, corruption, foreign intervention, and the long-term impact of divided loyalties on governance and stability.

Rural development in Lebanon dates back to 1931 through the work of the Institute of Rural Life, a cooperative initiative between AUB and the Near East Foundation. Building on these efforts, social activist Anissa Rawda Najjar helped establish Jami'at In'ash Al-Qarya (The Village Welfare Society) in 1953, the first rural development initiative in the Arab world dedicated to empowering rural women. The association provided training in sewing, handicrafts, health, and childcare; introduced embroidery programs for girls in 'Abadiyeh; established schools in Deir Kousha and Bshtifin; and revived silkworm breeding to improve rural livelihoods.

AUB University Libraries congratulates Ziad Kaj, Library Assistant and member of the AUB community for more than 30 years, on the publication of his latest novel, بيت الملح (House of Salt), his 16th literary work.

Set against the backdrop of the Lebanese Civil War, the novel tells a powerful true story of survival, resilience, and hope. We encourage our community to explore this inspiring work by purchasing a copy or borrowing it from the library.

Congratulations to Ziad on this milestone, and we wish بيت الملح continued success and a wide readership.

For World Environment Day 2026, the AUB Archives highlights selections from both its University Archives and Special Collections. From the University Archives, we revisit AUB’s commitment to environmental preservation through the 2003 initiative in which the Environment Club helped establish AUB as a bird sanctuary. From our Special Collections, we feature a remarkable photograph of the olive forest in Shuwayfat from the Joseph & Joyce Stein Photo Collection, captured as early as 1898, offering a glimpse of Lebanon’s natural landscape more than a century ago.
