Is High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) better Than Traditional Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training) Exercise?

We conducted a Cochrane systematic review, the gold standard for evidence synthesis—to determine the effectiveness of HIIT in sedentary adults at risk of cardio metabolic disease.

https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD013617.pub2

What is HIIT?
HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) is a form of exercise that alternates short bursts of vigorous or near-maximal effort with periods of active recovery or complete rest. Can do in short amount of time.

What is MICT?
MICT (Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training) is a traditional form of aerobic exercise performed at a steady, moderate intensity for a continuous period without planned rest intervals.

What we found
Compared with no exercise, HIIT can improve cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂max) and may help reduce waist circumference.

Compared with (MICT), HIIT offers a small additional improvement in aerobic fitness, while producing similar effects on:
• Blood pressure
• Waist circumference
• Blood triglycerides

The key message is,
HIIT is a time-efficient alternative, not necessarily a superior alternative to traditional moderate intensity exercise for most cardiometabolic risk factors.

Good for people with busy lifestyles, however, larger long-term studies are still needed to better understand its long-term benefits.
