🪨NALANDA GEDIGE — A MYSTERY IN THE HEART OF CEYLON 🇱🇰
Hidden among the greenery of Matale, beside the beautiful Bowatenna Reservoir, stands one of Sri Lanka’s most intriguing ancient monuments, Nalanda Gedige. 🌿
Dating back roughly to the 8th–10th centuries, this remarkable stone structure is famous for its unusual combination of Buddhist and South Indian architectural influences. Its design reflects the Pallava architectural tradition of South India, while the monument is believed to have been connected with a Buddhist monastery.
🪨 Look closely at the carvings and you’ll find fascinating details, including a depiction of Kubera, the ancient god of wealth, showcasing the diverse cultural influences that shaped Sri Lanka’s history.
💧 But Nalanda Gedige has another incredible story…
The monument originally stood in an area regarded as the geographical centre of Sri Lanka. When the Bowatenna Reservoir was created, the ancient Gedige was at risk of being submerged. Rather than allowing this piece of history to disappear, it was carefully dismantled, moved to higher ground and reconstructed at its present location.
Today, visitors can reach the Gedige via a peaceful causeway surrounded by greenery, with the reservoir and surrounding hills creating a beautiful backdrop. 🌿🏞️
🏛️ Period: Approximately 8th–10th century AD
🪨 Material: Stone
🌏 Famous for: A unique blend of Buddhist & South Indian architectural influences
💧 Nearby: Bowatenna Reservoir
A small monument carrying a huge piece of Sri Lanka’s history and another reminder that some of the island’s most fascinating treasures are hiding in plain sight. ❤️🇱🇰
