🐘 World Elephant Day | 12th August 2026
A future worth protecting begins with the next generation.
For these young elephants, the world is still a place to explore, learn and play. Their early years are spent within close-knit family groups, learning where to find food and water, move through their home range, and navigate life in the wild.
But for Sri Lanka’s elephants, growing up in the wild is becoming increasingly difficult.
Across the island, elephant habitats are being fragmented by agriculture, settlements, roads and development. As elephants lose access to the landscapes they depend on, encounters with people become more frequent, creating human-elephant conflict (HEC) that affects both wildlife and communities.
Conservation is about more than protecting elephants. People need safe homes and livelihoods; elephants need connected habitats, food, water and space to move. Long-term coexistence requires protecting habitats and corridors, reducing fragmentation, strengthening community-based solutions and using science to guide conservation.
Every calf we see today represents the next generation of Sri Lanka’s elephants. If we want them to grow up in the wild, we must ensure there is still enough wild left for them to grow into.
Conservation is not only the responsibility of researchers and organizations. We can all play a part. Support local researchers and organizations working on the ground. Follow and share their science-based work, support credible conservation and community initiatives, and listen to communities living alongside elephants. The Wildlife & Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka (WNPS), through its Human–Elephant Coexistence programme, supports research, community engagement, policy advocacy and practical approaches to reducing conflict.
This World Elephant Day, let us not only celebrate elephants, but think about the landscapes we are leaving behind for them.
Protect their habitat. Support communities. Support coexistence. Reduce conflict. Give the next generation a place to belong. 🌿🐘

Silent. Powerful. Endangered: not just in the wild, but in a changing world.
The Sri Lankan leopard is no longer confined to dense forests. As human activities expand, these apex predators are increasingly forced to navigate shared landscapes, often leading to conflict.
But the future of conservation lies not in separation, but in coexistence.
This International Leopard Day, let’s shift the conversation:
From admiration → to action
From awareness → to responsibility
Because protecting leopards means rethinking how we live alongside wildlife.
🐾 Their survival depends on our choices.
