Visual Pathway – The Journey of Vision 👁️
Have you ever wondered how your brain transforms light into the images you see every day? The visual pathway is a remarkable neural network that carries visual information from the eyes to the brain, allowing us to recognize faces, read, drive, and perceive the world around us.

🔹 Retina: Converts incoming light into electrical nerve impulses using specialized photoreceptor cells (rods and cones).
🔹 Optic Nerve: Transmits these visual signals from each eye toward the brain.
🔹 Optic Chiasm: A critical crossing point where nerve fibers from the nasal retina cross to the opposite side, ensuring that the right visual field is processed by the left brain and the left visual field by the right brain.
🔹 Optic Tract: Carries the reorganized visual information from the optic chiasm to the Lateral Geniculate Body (LGB).
🔹 Lateral Geniculate Body (LGN): Located in the thalamus, this structure acts as the primary relay station, processing and organizing visual information before sending it to the cerebral cortex.
🔹 Optic Radiation: A fan-shaped bundle of nerve fibers that carries visual signals from the LGN to the occipital lobe.
🔹 Visual Cortex: The final destination where the brain interprets color, shape, motion, depth, and fine details, creating the visual perception we experience every second.

Damage at different points along the visual pathway produces characteristic visual field defects such as monocular blindness, bitemporal hemianopia, homonymous hemianopia, and quadrantanopia. Understanding this pathway is essential for diagnosing neurological and ophthalmic disorders accurately.
