BREAKING:
AFL Soldier Reportedly Arrested With US$9,777 Worth of Tramadol in B**g County

B**G COUNTY, Liberia: An Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) soldier has reportedly been arrested in B**g County with Tramadol valued at about US$9,777, according to sources familiar with the operation.

The soldier, reportedly assigned to Lofa County, was intercepted in Sanoyea District, Lower B**g County, during an intelligence-led operation by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), the sources said.

Sources allege that he was transporting the controlled substance for suspected commercial purposes. He was reportedly later transferred to LDEA headquarters in Monrovia for further investigation.

The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed. Investigators are expected to establish the source and intended destination of the Tramadol and determine whether others were involved.

The LDEA and AFL have not publicly confirmed the reported arrest. Spoon Network is making efforts to independently confirm the report and obtain official comment.

The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) has been officially inducted into the African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF), giving Liberia a seat at the continental table as it advances its oil and gas program.

AFRIPERF is the continental body that brings together petroleum regulatory authorities from across Africa under one umbrella to promote a safe, efficient, and sustainable petroleum industry.

LPRA Director General Marilyn Logan said membership comes at a critical time as the Authority manages eight active Production Sharing Contracts and prepares for Liberia’s 2026 fourth quarter Direct Negotiation Petroleum Licensing Round.

“Regulating an activity like petroleum is a technical business, and the fastest way to build that competence is to sit in the room with regulators who have already done it,” Logan said. She added that the induction is part of LPRA’s strategy to build capacity through bilateral and multilateral partnerships as Liberia oversees a growing portfolio and works to attract new investors.

With membership, the LPRA gains a stronger regulatory framework, a more predictable environment for investors, and a voice in shaping Africa’s energy policy. The Authority will now take part in AFRIPERF’s technical working groups, training programs, and experience-sharing platforms, and will align Liberia’s regulatory standards on safety, environmental protection, and transparency with continental benchmarks ahead of the 2026 licensing round.

AFRIPERF was established in Accra, Ghana, on September 18, 2025, when regulators from 16 African nations met and 8 countries — Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, The Gambia, Madagascar, Sudan, Guinea and Togo — signed the Forum’s Charter.

The LPRA says it remains committed to the responsible development and management of Liberia’s petroleum resources for the benefit of all Liberians.

Court Found Two Senior LDEA Officers, Nigerian National Guilty Of Drugs Trafficking In Margibi County

A 12-member jury panel at the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County has adjudged two senior officers of the Liberian Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and a Nigerian national guilty in connection with one hundred and eighty-one thousand United States dollars (US$181, 008) and over thirty-six million Liberia dollars (LD$63, 201, 600) drug trafficking case in Margibi County.

The jury's guilty verdict against defendants Joe Logan, a senior-ranking LDEA officer assigned to the Roberts International Airport, senior female LDEA officer Lovette Flowers, and Tony Obi, a Nigerian national, came after two hours of heated arguments from both the state prosecutor and the defense lawyers.

The prosecution contended that during the month-long trial, it produced four witnesses who overwhelmingly linked the defendants to the crimes. According to the state, defendant Quita Dolo Kosso and another LDEA officer, Abdullah Sherrif, who were part of the drug syndicate, admitted to the crime, and both have been sentenced to five and two years' imprisonment, respectively.
State prosecutors explained that out of the fourteen plates of co***ne confiscated from the drug cartel, both defendants Logan and Flowers (LDEA officers) took four plates from the fruit of the crime and sold said drug on the black market.
The prosecution further stated that officers of the LDEA received US$10,000 as a bribe from the drug cartel to compromise the fight against drugs in the country.

“The last people ever to be involved in drug crime are LDEA officers because they were trained to detect and fight drug crime. These LDEA officers facing trial have been involved with organized drug crime with their Nigerian counterpart called Tony Obi. So, bring a guilty verdict against them to serve as a deterrent to other law enforcement officers who may want to engage in similar acts,” state prosecutors told the jurors.

In their counterargument, defense lawyers asked the jurors to set the defendants free, as the state has failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. “There exists reasonable doubt in the state prosecutor’s argument, and the law says once there is a reasonable doubt, the defendants should be set free,” the defense team stated.

“The investigation established 10 plates of co***ne instead of 14 plates. So, for the fact that the state has increased the 10 plates of co***ne to 14 plates, it means there is variance or contradiction in their witnesses' testimonies, which should operate in favor of the defendants,” the defense lawyers maintained.

According to court records of this case, the drugs were intercepted from convict Quita Kosso in July 2025, who had traveled from Thailand to the Roberts International Airport on board a Kenyan Flight.

Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised alarm over reports that some young Nigerians are selling their kidneys for as little as $1,100 as they struggle with the country’s cost-of-living crisis. Atiku blamed soaring prices of food, transport, rent, healthcare and electricity, posting on X: "Young people should be selling dreams, ideas and innovation, not their body organs." Selling organs is illegal in Nigeria, but Atiku says poverty is making vulnerable young people easy targets for criminal networks. His comments come amid a recent police investigation into an alleged organ-harvesting and human-trafficking operation involving four suspects, including two kidney specialists.
