Meet Malesekele Matekane, a woman shaping better homes and communities for Basotho.
With over 18 years in housing, town planning and land development, Malesekele has risen from Housing Officer to Managing Director of the Lesotho Housing and Land Development Corporation.
We sit down with her to unpack her leadership journey, the challenges she has overcome, and her vision for better-planned and sustainable communities in Lesotho.
For generations, traditional leadership has largely been viewed as a male-dominated space. But Acting Chief Mabohlokoa Majara of Ha Mabote is challenging that perception, proving that women can lead with courage, wisdom and dedication.
With 20 years of leadership experience, Chief Majara believes that effective leadership is not defined by gender, but by a leaderβs ability to serve, listen and make a meaningful difference in the community.
Speaking to Informative Newspaper, she shared valuable insights into what makes a great leader, highlighting how upbringing, values and life experiences can shape a personβs leadership style.

We are proud to introduce WYDE (Women and Youth Democratic Engagement), a new weekly column dedicated to sharing inspiring stories of people making a meaningful difference in their communities.
Under the theme β60 for 60,β the column will feature 60 remarkable stories celebrating women leaders, men championing womenβs empowerment, and persons with disabilities whose contributions continue to inspire, empower and shape Lesotho.
For our first WYDE feature, we meet Hon. TΕ‘epang TΕ‘ita Mosena, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, who shares her leadership journey, reflects on the importance of democratic participation, and discusses the vital role women play in driving positive change.
Through WYDE, we hope to spotlight voices, experiences and achievements that inspire greater participation and remind us that meaningful change begins with individuals who are willing to lead, serve and make a difference.
