In 1980, right as the world was trading disco for synth-pop and neon arcades, Casio dropped a watch that felt less like a timepiece and more like a sci-fi gadget strapped to your wrist. Instead of boring physical gears, it featured a wild dual-screen display where pixels literally drew fake, sweeping clock hands on the left, while flashing crisp digital numbers on the right. But the ultimate flex was the sound: instead of that standard, annoying high-pitched beep, the Casio Watch packed a built-in micro-synthesizer that played actual 8-bit melodies for its alarms and featured a different custom chime for every single day of the week. Wrapped in heavy chrome and stainless steel, it wasn’t just a watch; it was the ultimate retro-futuristic status symbol of the decade.

In 1992, fitness was blowing up—neon spandex, aerobic tapes, and gym culture were everywhere. Casio jumped on the trend and dropped the AW-60 Fitness Trainer, one of the world’s very first “smartwatches” for workout tracking. long before Apple or Fitbit existed.
Instead of looking like a boring black gadget, Casio wrapped it in full ‘90s pop-art style: electric turquoise resin, vibrant yellow buttons, and a split screen with real analog hands alongside a digital display. You could type in your age and weight, select your workout—like swimming, biking, or running—and the watch would calculate how many calories you burned. It was bright, futuristic, and pure 1990s cool.
