😱 Single‑zero roulette finally lands at The STRAT in Las Vegas…
but no racetrack, no section betting, and a layout printed in reverse.

If you’re going to offer European roulette, at least give players and dealers the tools — and the training — to play it properly.

🇬🇧 🎰 Why the UK Casino “Investment Threat” Story Ignores the Human Factor
The recent claims that UK casino investment is “under threat” because of a possible rise in Machine Games Duty (MGD) leave out the real issue. For years, major operators have been shifting away from traditional table gaming and towards electronic terminals and slot machines — a model now being exposed by proposed tax changes.

🏢 Genting’s Strategy: Fewer Staff, More Machines
Genting UK increased the minimum roulette bet on live tables to £5 (US$6.30), pushing players towards electronic roulette terminals where bets can be as low as 10p (US$0.13).

The intention was clear:

💸 Reduce staffing costs

🎰 Increase reliance on machines

👤 Replace trained gaming professionals with terminals

This model only works when machine taxation stays low.

📈 The Proposed MGD Increase Has Exposed the Model
The Chancellor is reportedly considering doubling the standard rate of Machine Games Duty from 20% to 40% in the upcoming Budget.
(20% → 40% = equivalent of a tax jump from US$0.20 to US$0.40 per taxable dollar of machine profit)

This is not yet law, but the proposal alone has triggered strong reactions from machine‑dependent operators.

Paul Willcock, CEO of Genting UK, has warned that 13 of their 32 casinos would become “unprofitable or unsustainable” if MGD is doubled — and would be shut down.

This isn’t a sudden crisis.
It’s the predictable consequence of building a business model around machines instead of people.

🏬 Betting Shops Are Using the Same Playbook
High‑street betting shops are also warning of closures. These venues rely heavily on the four high‑yield gaming machines they are permitted to operate.

While they do have formal social‑responsibility obligations, in practice customers can feed cash into machines for long periods with minimal meaningful intervention.

Without those machines, many shops become unprofitable — showing how fragile machine‑dependent models really are.

🌍 How UK Slot Taxes Compare Internationally
To put the proposed UK 40% MGD rate into perspective:

🇺🇸 United States
Slot tax varies by state:

Nevada: ~6.75%

Pennsylvania: ~54%

Maryland: ~50–61%

New York: ~70% on some machine categories

🇩🇪 Germany
Effective slot tax often over 50%, depending on municipality.

🇫🇷 France
Casino slot tax ranges between 20% and 45%, depending on revenue bands.

🇮🇹 Italy
Slot machines taxed at 22–25%, VLTs higher.

🇸🇪 Sweden
Flat 18% gambling tax on GGR (all products).

🇦🇺 Australia
State‑based; many exceed 30–40% effective tax on slots.

👉 Conclusion:
A proposed UK rate of 40% is not extreme internationally — it simply disrupts operators who rely too heavily on machines.

🧑‍💼 Gambling Should Take Place in Supervised, Human‑Run Environments
This situation highlights a simple truth:

Gambling is safest and most sustainable when it takes place in controlled, supervised environments staffed by trained professionals — not in minimally staffed shops or machine‑heavy casinos.
Casinos should be focusing on:

🤝 Human interaction

👥 Employment and development of gaming staff

🎲 Proper training in table games

🛡️ Responsible, supervised gaming environments

These are the foundations of real casino gaming — not terminals and minimal oversight.

🚪 If Corporations Won’t Support Human Gaming, They Should Step Aside
If large operators no longer wish to run casinos under a model that prioritises staff, training, and live gaming, the responsible step would be to surrender their licences so independent operators can revitalise the industry.

However, while some corporations may close venues, they rarely release licences — effectively blocking new entrants who could operate casinos properly, with a focus on people rather than machines.

❤️ The Future of Casino Gaming Is Human
The proposed MGD increase hasn’t “threatened investment.”
It has simply revealed how dependent some operators have become on machines.

✔ More trained staff
✔ More live games
✔ More human interaction
✔ Less reliance on machines
That is how the industry grows — and how it protects both players and jobs.

Headcrack — the game everyone was curious about at G2E this week.

Pros:
• Fifty‑Cent branding gives it instant visibility and pop‑culture appeal.
• Easy to learn, making it accessible for new players and casual gamblers.
• Flexible dealing formats — single‑dealer or double‑dealer setups depending on staffing levels.

Cons:
• The same branding that gives it “street cred” may also push away players who actually care about street cred.
• Simplicity cuts both ways — there’s no real long‑term strategy to keep players engaged.
• Although it offers multiple dealing formats, most casinos will default to single‑dealer, which risks the game becoming repetitive and uninspiring for staff.

🇺🇸 Chip’s Casino in Lakewood Set to Close, 131 Jobs at Risk

Chip’s Casino in Lakewood will permanently close on November 30, according to a WARN notice filed with the Washington Employment Security Department. The notice, submitted by Maverick Washington LLC on September 28, confirms that the entire site at 8200 Tacoma Mall Blvd. will shut down, affecting approximately 131 employees.

The filing makes clear that the layoffs are not due to relocation or outsourcing. Roles impacted include table‑game dealers, security specialists, cage cashiers, servers, cooks, and managers. Some employees are represented by Teamsters Local 117.

Maverick Washington LLC is currently in bankruptcy proceedings, and the company notes that the closure could be delayed or avoided if a new owner or operator takes over the property during the restructuring process.

Chip’s Casino is not the only property affected. Maverick has listed several other Washington casinos slated for closure:

🎰 Macau Casino – Lakewood
🎰 Palace Casino – Lakewood
🎰 Great American Casino – Everett
🎰 All Star Casino – Silverdale
🎰 Coyote Bobs Casino – Kennewick
🎰 Crazy Moose Casino – Pasco
🎰 Casino Caribbean – Yakima

With multiple closures across the state and more than a hundred jobs on the line in Lakewood alone, the situation highlights the growing impact of Maverick’s financial troubles on Washington’s gaming industry.
