The salt pans at Xwejni Bay in Gozo use a simple but fascinating traditional method to produce sea salt.

Seawater is collected in shallow limestone pools, where the heat of the sun gradually evaporates the water over several days, leaving behind salt crystals. This process is repeated throughout the summer season, usually from mid-May until September.

Once harvested, the salt is dried and stored in caves carved into the coastal rock, ready to be used or sold.

Happy September 8th!

Today we celebrate Victory Day (Jum il-Vittorja), honouring Malta’s historic triumphs in the Great Siege of 1565, the Siege of Gozo in 1551, and the end of WWII’s Siege of Malta.

At the same time, four iconic towns across the islands: Senglea, Naxxar, Mellieħa, and Xagħra are alive with festas celebrating Marija Bambina (the Nativity of Our Lady).

Wishing everyone across the Maltese islands a wonderful holiday! 🎉
