A rescue operation was carried out in Dingli after a paraglider required medical assistance.
Civil Protection Department crews responded to the emergency and worked closely with the medical team from Mater Dei Hospital. The injured individual was safely transported using a CPD rescue asset to the nearest accessible road, before being transferred to an ambulance for further care.

A new parliamentary term is now underway, with Carmelo Abela elected Speaker of the House during Parliament’s opening sitting following the 2026 General Election.

His election signals the formal start of the new legislature, as Members of Parliament begin work for the coming term. Abela takes over the role from Anġlu Farrugia.

Ask anyone over thirty in Malta and they’ll have a Paceville story. Queuing outside Axis with a Lm1 coin in hand, waiting for the laser show. Rock nights at Coconut Grove. Beach parties at Styx. The foam, the Aftershocks, the long walk home as the sun came up. And yet, astonishingly, Paceville barely existed at all before the 1970s, it was a quiet corner of St Julian’s with a handful of small bars and the grand old Dragonara palace, which became a casino in 1964. From there, a tourism boom and a handful of entrepreneurs turned a few streets above Spinola Bay into ‘Malta’s Sin City’. This is the honest story of Maltese nightlife, how Paceville was born, the legendary clubs that defined each generation, and why so much of that history now survives only in the memories of the people who lived it.

It was once one of the most beautiful buildings in Malta. The Royal Opera House, It-Teatru Rjal, stood at the entrance to Valletta, a grand neoclassical theatre designed by Edward Middleton Barry, the architect of London’s Covent Garden. It opened in 1866 with Bellini’s I Puritani, and for decades it was the glittering heart of Maltese cultural life, hosting the great operas of Verdi, Bellini and Massenet and famous international singers. But its story was a tragic one. In 1873, just seven years after it opened, a fire gutted its interior. It was painstakingly restored and reopened in 1877 with Verdi’s Aida. Then, on the evening of the 7th of April 1942, at the height of the wartime siege of Malta, a German air raid scored a direct hit and reduced the opera house to ruins. It was never rebuilt. For seventy years its roofless shell and broken columns stood at the gateway of Valletta, a haunting reminder of the war. Only in 2013 was the site finally redeveloped, when the architect Renzo Piano controversially chose to leave the ruins in place and build a modern open-air theatre within them: the Pjazza Teatru Rjal. This is the story of Malta’s lost opera house, how it rose, how it burned, how it fell, and how its ruins found a second life.

Three people were rescued this afternoon after becoming stranded near Ta’ Marija Cave in Ġnejna following a trekking expedition.

Civil Protection Malta, together with the Armed Forces of Malta, launched a coordinated rescue operation. Teams from several fire stations were dispatched to the area, where all three individuals were safely located and brought back to land.

CPD posted the above images and thanked all responders for their quick action and help.

The Nationalist Party is set to nominate former leader Bernard Grech as Deputy Speaker of Parliament when the House reconvenes on the 20th of June.

If approved, Grech will take on a key parliamentary role after leading the PN between 2020 and 2025.

Malta recorded an annual inflation rate of 2.1% in May 2026, according to Eurostat’s latest map. 📊

This places Malta below both the EU average of 3.3% and the euro area average of 3.2%.
While prices are still rising, the figures show that Malta’s inflation rate was lower than many other EU countries at the time, including Romania, Bulgaria and Lithuania, which recorded the highest rates.
