Systems and Control Engineering at UM

Last week, members of the Department of Systems and Control Engineering participated in the 26th ACM Symposium on Document Engineering (DocEng 2026), held in Fribourg, Switzerland.

The Department contributed to the conference programme in several ways. Dr Liam Butler delivered the half-day tutorial “Temporally Entangled Documents: Multimodal AI for ICU Records Under Label Ambiguity”, exploring the challenges of combining clinical documents, physiological signals and other multimodal data when timing and diagnostic labels are uncertain.

DocEng 2026 also hosted the Maltese OCR Competition – “OCRs for Corpus Extraction for the Maltese Language”, organised by Dr Marc Tanti from the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology together with Dr Stefania Cristina and Prof. Alexandra Bonnici from the Department of Systems and Control Engineering.

The Department would like to congratulate Kenneth Scerri on his promotion to Associate Professor. We wish him continued success in his academic career and future endeavours.

The 2026 Faculty of Engineering Exhibition: A Showcase of Excellence Across Diverse Final-Year Projects Held on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June 2026

On the 27th and 28th of June, the Department's final-year students showcased their final year projects at the Faculty of Engineering Exhibition. Well done to all students!

Visitors also had the unique opportunity to tour our state-of-the-art laboratories and participate in hands-on workshops and project demonstrations in an interactive setting. These workshops were led by members of staff from our Department and Centre for Biomedical Cybernetics - University of Malta.

We are seeking a full-time Research Support Officer (RSO) for an 18-month appointment with the Department of Systems and Control Engineering at the University of Malta.

The opportunity offers candidates the opportunity to contribute across a range of departmental activities, including:

• Supporting ongoing research and innovation projects;
• Assisting with laboratory setup, maintenance, and operation;
• Developing and preparing demonstrations for outreach, teaching, and research activities;
• Contributing to the day-to-day technical and practical activities that keep our laboratories running effectively.

This position would suit graduates with an interest in engineering, research, laboratory work, and hands-on technical problem-solving.
