Find an AED. SAVE A LIFE! ๐ซโค๏ธ
An AED - Automatic External Defibrillator - can oftentimes be found in public places, especially in more crowded locations, but does everyone know what they are, or why they are so important? ๐๐ค
Designed for non-medics in an emergency cardiac arrest situation, AEDs provide voice prompts, light and text instructions for anyone to assist, from untrained bystanders, to experienced professionals outside their place of work. They are to be used immediately, to prevent risk while waiting for emergency services. ๐ฉบ
Common Misconceptions about AEDs:
โ "If I help, I am liable" - By Good Samaritans Laws in Malta, individuals who provide assistance in emergencies cover any unintentional damage, regardless of the outcome.
โ "It's better to wait for emergency services" - For every minute without a defibrillator, the risk of death of the cardiac arrest victim increases by 7-10%. Irreversible brain damage can begin after just 4-6 minutes without oxygen. Access to, and use of a defibrillator can double, or even triple the chances of survival.
โ "It's not worth it to keep one" - For public spaces or business to keep an AED on hand, demonstrates a "commitment to safety" and can reduce legal exposure, or negligence claims if an incident occurs.
โ "I can accidentally shock someone" - Prior to shocks, the device detects a shockable heart rhythm. The device does not activate if the individual does not need the shock.
For every place of work to open public space, or even your own home, an AED can be the difference between life and death. Invest, or risk paying the further price.

Opt-out systems for Organ Donation? In recent years, the Maltese government has hinted at Malta adopting an "opt-out" alternative to an "opt-in" system for organ donation. ๐ค
With the current system, Maltese citizens would have to opt-in to give consent to donate their organs upon their passing, but lately, people have proposed changes in the system to adopt presumed consent to donate organs, to increase percentages, and save more people in need. ๐ซ๐ฉบ
Many EU countries, such as Spain, Belgium and Austria have already adopted this innovative scheme, and this has led to significant increases of donor registration (13-40% in some studies) by leveraging people's tendency to stick with the default. ๐๐
Nonetheless, Times of Malta recently published that the plan to adopt the system in Malta has recently fallen out of favour. "Following two years of discussions with experts, we will not be going for an "opt-out system" said the Prime Minister, Robert Abela. ๐งโ๐ฌ๐ฐ
In place of this, the public consultation will push for a framework based on the "Donation after Circulator Death" program, instead of the current system which states organs can only be retrieved once the patient is brain-dead. ๐งฎ๐ง
What are your opinions regarding proposals in this system, and do you see any possible changes in the near future? Let us know via ๐ฉ or ๐ฒ, or in the comments below!
