Project Borneo
There is no contact with orangutan on our projects.
Excessive contact with lots of different people not only puts the orang's health at serious risk but also habituates them massively to people and our behaviour. In rehabilitation centres, this kind of habituation can be hugely problematic as we are obviously trying to convince them to like the jungle rather than humans.

So many legends, we had to start a new wall! π
One of the proudest moments in a volunteer's journey is seeing their name added to our Wall of Legends after dedicating their time, energy, and hard work to Project Borneo.
Over the years, we've been incredibly fortunate to welcome so many amazing volunteers that our first wall is now completely full! And there was no way we could bring ourselves to paint over the names and memories that made it so special. Instead, we've started a brand-new wall to celebrate the next generation of legends joining our team.
Our team often find themselves stopping to read through the names, sharing stories and reminiscing about the laughter, challenges, and unforgettable moments we've experienced together. It's a reminder that even after your volunteering journey ends, the impact you've made lives on.
Would you like to leave your mark on Project Borneo and earn your place on our Wall of Legends?
Drop us an email at [email protected] to receive a copy of our volunteer information pack and find out how you can get involved! π¦§πΏ

Little orangutan, big adventures! π¦§π
Our little boy is growing in confidence every single day, and he's certainly keeping us all on our toes!
From scaling the highest climbing structures to investigating every corner of his habitat, he's always looking for his next adventure. One of his favourite pastimes is playing with the enrichment items lovingly handmade by our volunteers, finding new and creative ways to explore, learn, and have fun.
Watching him develop his independence, curiosity, and climbing skills is a joy for the team, and we can't wait to see what mischief he gets up to next! πΏβ¨

Welcome to a new week with George! π¦§π
Meet George, the king of Project Borneo and the most dominant male orangutan in our care. With his impressive cheek pads, powerful presence, and confident personality, George is impossible to miss.
Known for his bold nature and commanding character, George carries himself with the quiet confidence of a true leader. Whether he's making his way through the forest or keeping a watchful eye on his surroundings, he naturally earns the respect of both orangutans and visitors alike.
As a dominant male, George plays an important role in the orangutan world, showcasing the strength, intelligence, and unique behaviours that make this incredible species so fascinating.
So, as we begin a new week, we're taking a little inspiration from George: stand tall, be confident, and face the week ahead with determination!
Have a wonderful Monday from all of us at Project Borneo. πΏ

π Slow Loris Saturday π
Today we're shining the spotlight on one of Borneo's most unique and misunderstood residents: the slow loris. π§‘
With their huge eyes and gentle movements, slow lorises may look adorable, but they are perfectly adapted for life in the rainforest. These nocturnal primates spend their nights carefully moving through the trees in search of insects, fruit and tree sap.
Did you know - slow lorises are the only venomous primates in the world. They produce a toxin from glands near their elbows, which can be used as a defence against predators.
Sadly, their cute appearance has made them a target for the illegal pet trade. Many slow lorises are taken from the wild as infants, often after their mothers have been killed. To make them easier to handle, traffickers may cruelly remove or cut their teeth, causing lifelong pain, infection and making future release into the wild extremely difficult.
The illegal pet trade not only causes immense suffering for individual animals but also threatens wild populations by removing breeding adults and young from their natural habitats.
At Project Borneo, we are committed to protecting wildlife and raising awareness about the impact of the illegal wildlife trade. Wild animals belong in the wild, where they can play their vital role in maintaining healthy rainforest ecosystems.
𧑠The next time you see a slow loris, remember: the best way to admire these incredible animals is from afar, in their natural habitat.

Just stopping by to say hello! π
How adorable is this little pangolin?
Despite their cute appearance, pangolins are sadly among the most trafficked mammals in the world. They face immense pressure from the illegal wildlife trade, driven by demand for their scales, as well as the ongoing loss of their natural habitat.
Covered in beautifully overlapping scales and equipped with an impressively long tongue for finding ants and termites, pangolins are some of the rainforest's most fascinating and unique creatures.
These gentle, shy animals play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, and they deserve a future where they can thrive safely in the wild.

π Macaque Monday π
Today we're shining the spotlight on our wonderful community of macaques!
At Project Borneo, we care for several macaques, including both pig-tailed and long-tailed macaques. Many of these individuals have come to us for rehabilitation after being rescued from the devastating illegal pet trade or because they were coming into conflict with human settlements.
Our dedicated team works hard to provide them with the care they need while searching for suitable locations where they can eventually be released back into the wild, where they belong.
Macaques are highly intelligent, extremely social, and often incredibly cheeky! From their playful antics to their complex social interactions, they never fail to keep us entertained while reminding us just how remarkable these primates are.
𧑠Every successful rehabilitation and release is another step towards giving these macaques a second chance at life in the wild.

π Saturday Spotlight: Aman π
Meet Aman, one of the magnificent adult male orangutans that calls Matang Wildlife Centre home. π§‘
One of the first things you'll notice about Aman is his impressive flanges. These large cheek pads are a feature found in some mature male orangutans and are made up of fatty tissue and skin. Flanged males are often larger than unflanged males and can be recognised by their distinctive appearance and deep, resonating long calls that can travel through the rainforest.
Scientists believe these calls help males communicate their presence across vast forest areas, reducing the need for direct confrontation and helping females locate them.
Aman's striking flanges are a reminder of just how extraordinary orangutans are. Every individual has their own unique personality and characteristics, making each encounter with these incredible great apes truly special.
𦧠Have you been lucky enough to spot Aman during a visit or volunteer placement?
