A social enterprise is a business with primarily social
objectives, whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the
community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profits for shareholders’ (DTI, 2002). Although there remains no single agreed definition of ‘social enterprises’ (SEs), they
have often been defined as organisations that apply commercial strategies to address a
social and/or environmental problem (Calvo and Morales, 2015)
