Nestled beneath thick coastal trees and surrounded by lush green grass, these sites offer a unique blend of tropical comfort, natural beauty, and easy beach access. This is what makes Morrungulo special, a campsite where you can enjoy the cool shade of a forest while only steps away from the sea.
Barraca 7A is a spacious, well-grassed campsite tucked away in a peaceful corner of the camp, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a quieter, more private escape. Shaded by beautiful coastal trees, it offers uninterrupted beach views and direct access to the pristine shoreline. The extra-large barraca, along with an outdoor tap and wash-up table beneath the trees, adds comfort and convenience to your stay. Located just a short walk from the ablution block, Barraca 7A is the perfect tropical retreat for families and groups looking to relax in a tranquil beachfront setting.
Campsite S3 is a spacious campsite nestled beside the lush coastal bush. It features a private wooden deck overlooking the pristine beach, offering the perfect spot to relax to the sound of the waves. Conveniently located right next to the smaller ablution block, you'll never have far to walk while still enjoying a peaceful, tropical escape.

Sea Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus)
One of the most beautiful sights around Morrungulo is the Sea Hibiscus, a coastal tree that thrives on the beach in sandy soils. Throughout the warmer months, its large tropical flowers add bright splashes of colour to the camp before gently carpeting the ground beneath the trees.
A fascinating feature of the Sea Hibiscus is that each flower lasts only a single day. It typically opens yellow in the morning, gradually changes to orange and then deep red by evening before falling, creating a stunning display on the sand.
Besides its beauty, the Sea Hibiscus plays an important role in stabilising coastal dunes and providing shade and shelter for birds, insects, and other wildlife, making it an iconic part of Mozambique's coastal forests. 🌺

Mutable Sun Squirrel (Heliosciurus mutabilis)
The Mutable Sun Squirrel is one of the special little residents we regularly see around our camp. They are often spotted darting through the trees or nibbling on the Indian almond nuts that grow here, making them a delightful sight for guests.
Although they're common around our camp, they're actually considered a fairly rare squirrel with a limited distribution. They are mainly found in dense coastal forests of southeastern Africa, where they spend most of their time in the forest canopy.
Their diet consists of nuts, seeds, fruits, flowers, and occasionally insects. Agile climbers with excellent balance, they move effortlessly through the trees and play an important role in dispersing seeds, helping to maintain the health of the coastal forest ecosystem.

Beach Lettuce (Scaevola plumieri) 🌿🌊
This hardy coastal plant is perfectly adapted to life by the sea. It thrives on sandy beaches and dunes, where its extensive root system helps stabilize the sand and protect shorelines from erosion. Its thick, fleshy leaves tolerate salt spray and harsh coastal conditions that many other plants cannot.
Beach Lettuce also provides shelter for small coastal wildlife and produces attractive white flowers followed by fleshy fruits that can float on seawater, allowing the plant to spread naturally along coastlines. A true survivor of the beach, it's an important part of healthy coastal ecosystems.
