Something a little different on the water today!

A familiar part of the Walvis Bay skyline is on the move. The Valaris 109 jack-up drilling rig, which has been in Walvis Bay since 2020, was towed out into the bay today to be loaded aboard the Seaway Falcon.

And here’s the fascinating part: a semi-submersible heavy-lift ship like the Seaway Falcon is essentially a ship that ships shipping ships (say that three times fast 😉) - and even massive oil rigs.

Using ballast tanks, the vessel lowers its enormous deck beneath the water, allowing the rig to be floated into position above it. The ballast water is then pumped out and the Seaway Falcon rises again, lifting the rig clear of the water for transport.

We got a view of the preparations from the water today. Quite a spectacular feat of engineering to witness right here in Walvis Bay!

Not to be dramatic, but sunsets are significantly better when they involve the Atlantic, wildlife sightings and a glass of bubbly.
