Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) is a recently registered Namibian NGO with a focus on sustainable urban development, informal settlements and the disadvantaged communities that reside in them. DWN is part of a world-wide network of Development Workshop (DW) organisations with centers in Canada, Angola and France, and offices in Vietnam and Burkino Faso. It is funded by non-governmental organisations, private citizens, and national and international development organisations. DW is not a funding organization and does not raise funds directly from the public. DW was founded in 1975 by three Canadian architect students with the objective to improve the livelihoods of poor and disadvantaged communities, with a specific focus on human settlements. Over the last 40 years, DW has implemented many award winning and successful programmes in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. DW’s biggest operation is currently in Angola, where it started working in 1981 (www.dw.angonet.org). Active in the sectors of peace-building & reconciliation, water & sanitation, urban infrastructure, urban planning, research & advocacy, micro-finance and climate change & environment, DW Angola had, at peak times, more than 150 employees. It established a micro finance institution, that today has more than 50, 000 clients and runs a successful and sustainable social housing programme.

Supporting thriving families.
, with support from the Embassy of Finland in Namibia , hosted a one-day Financial Literacy and Business Management training for 25 parents and caregivers from ECD centres in Windhoek, whose micro-businesses were selected to receive seed funding and mentorship.
The participants are parents and caregivers of children attending DWN-supported ECD centres in the Samora Machel, Moses Garoëb and Tobias Hainyeko constituencies. Their businesses span poultry and livestock, catering, tailoring, retail, food trailers, event equipment hire, tuckshops and kapana trading.
Through this initiative, DWN is supporting caregivers to strengthen their livelihoods and business skills, recognising that children’s development is closely connected to the wellbeing and economic stability of the families who care for them.
This forms part of DWN’s Finland-funded Supported Families, Thriving Children: A Holistic ECD and Livelihoods Programme in Namibia’s Informal Settlements because supporting young children also means supporting the families and communities around them.

Creating spaces where children can learn, play and thrive.
Development Workshop Namibia (DWN), in partnership with the Embassy of Finland in Namibia, has supported Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in the informal settlements of Windhoek. ncluding Samora Machel, Tobias Hainyeko and Moses ǁGaroëb constituencies , with essential toys, furniture and teaching and learning materials.
For young children, a quality learning environment is more than four walls. 🧸📚 It is a space where they can play, explore, build confidence, develop social skills and lay the foundations for lifelong learning.
The materials provided are helping ECD practitioners create more engaging, child-friendly spaces where learning happens through play and every child has an opportunity to participate, discover and grow.
Because every child deserves a strong start and every early learning space should give them room to imagine, learn and thrive. ❤️

Highlights from Okahao. Our team recently held a great progress meeting with the Okahao Town Council, Lund Consulting Engineers, and Ndakalimwe Investment cc. We discussed the latest developments on the DWN site's infrastructure, including the gravel roads, electrical works, and the sewer pump station. We’re excited to see these essential services taking shape!”.
