On Duality (or, When You're a Bit Too Honest With Yourself)

"I've never felt so goddamn human", I said as I poured out my existential anguish to the crowd, sharing a poem that was raw and straight from the heart.

I was anxious all day. I didn't want to depress the crowd, but I didn't want to put on a front either. I decided that being honest and real is the most important thing to do, and I had to trust that the piece was gonna hit home not just for me, but hopefully for someone else too. The rest of the night, while I chain-smoked through the vulnerability hangover, I had chats with people who felt the same way about life, and the world. The conversations I had were unfiltered and without the script of social niceties.

The other artists, and brought the same honesty on stage after me. I remembered why I've been so fu***ng over performance and why my art felt so dead for so long. I was trying to manufacture hope in a world and life that feels like it's burning down. But being completely honest spits in the face of artificiality. It reminded me that I'm not done.

Thank you for putting on this PENY CLUB concept dinner tonight So we can bridge gaps in community and hold eachother up.
