Nigeria will vote in 2027 under a new law. The Electoral Act 2026, signed on 18 February 2026, repeals the 2022 Act and amends at least 20 provisions. It has already been applied in the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.

Key insights:
- Polling-unit results must now be transmitted electronically to IReV, but the signed Form EC8A remains the primary source if transmission fails.

- Indirect primaries are scrapped. Parties must now hold direct primaries or consensus and submit digital membership registers to INEC beforehand.

- The presidential spending cap doubles from N5 billion to N10 billion, and the limit on individual donations rises from N50 million to N500 million.

Less than 10% of candidates running for president, vice president, and the National Assembly in Nigeria are women.

INEC has released its final list of candidates for the 2027 general election. Women account for only 9.7 per cent of the 4,899 candidates contesting the presidency, vice-presidency, and National Assembly despite making up nearly half of Nigeria's population and registered voters.

Key Insights:
- Only 2 of 18 presidential candidates are women.
- Since 1999, just 176 women have ever been elected to the National Assembly, which is 5.36 per cent of all seats filled.
- 23 of Nigeria's 36 states, plus the FCT, currently have no woman representing them in either chamber.

Nigeria's National Gender Policy set a 35 per cent affirmative action target for women in governance in 2006, but its implementation has remained weak.
