It was a powerful display of political solidarity, appreciation and renewed confidence in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Abba Moro, PhD, stormed Oju Local Government Area on Monday, August 10, 2026, for a working visit that turned into a major political statement.

The visit was more than the commissioning of a healthcare facility he facilitated for the people of Oju. It became a moment of celebration, political engagement and a strong show of support for the PDP and its leadership across Igede land.

What has become an annual farmers' empowerment programme for the Igede people by a Federal Permanent Secretary, Pastor Raymond Omachi, held today, Thursday, 6th August, 2026, in Oju. Communities were adequately mobilized through a radio announcement made the previous day, which contained the names of all the benefiting settlements.

The meticulous former Benue State gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the PDP during the last party primaries, Commander Henry Ode Ojowu (Rtd), who coordinated this year's distribution, as he did last year's, took a moment to speak with FreeWizReporters about the entire programme.

On July 16, 2026, the Association of Igede Media Professionals (AIMP) convened its 2nd Annual Public Lecture at Merit House, Maitama, Abuja. More than another gathering of political leaders and professionals, the event became a defining moment in the ongoing conversation about the future of Igedeland.

Held under the theme, "Rethinking Political Leadership Recruitment System in Igedeland Ahead of 2027," the lecture brought together traditional rulers, political office holders, academics, media practitioners, professionals and stakeholders from across Igedeland and the diaspora to confront one fundamental question: Why has political representation over the past twenty-five years failed to translate into meaningful development for the Igede people?

The keynote address by Sir (Barr.) Benson Upah, JP, spokesperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress, challenged long-held assumptions about politics in Igedeland and inspired robust discussions that culminated in a far-reaching communiquรฉ. Beyond the speeches and resolutions, the lecture offered practical lessons that could redefine Igede politics as preparations gather pace for the 2027 general elections.
Leadership Is Too Important to Be Left to Chance

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the lecture was the insistence that leadership must no longer emerge through accident, sentiment or emergency arrangements. Participants observed that the prevailing recruitment system has largely been driven by zoning, "our turn" politics, clan loyalties, financial influence and personal interests, often at the expense of competence, integrity and proven capacity.

The message was unmistakable: political offices should no longer be viewed as rewards for loyalty or entitlement but as positions of public trust requiring vision, character and service. This represents a significant shift in political thinking. Rather than asking whose turn it is to occupy an office, the community is being challenged to ask a more important question: Who is best prepared to lead?
Competence Must Replace Sentiment

Another major lesson from the lecture is that the future of Igedeland depends more on the quality of its leaders than on the number of offices its people occupy.

For over two decades of uninterrupted democratic governance, Igedeland has produced elected representatives at different levels. Yet Igede nation continues to struggle with poor road infrastructure, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, absence of industries and widespread poverty despite its enormous agricultural potential and human resources.

The conclusion reached by participants was sobering: representation without effective leadership cannot produce development. This explains why the lecture consistently returned to the principles of competence, integrity, accountability and public service as the foundation for future political recruitment.

As keynote speaker Benson Upah reminded participants, borrowing from leadership expert Robin Sharma: "Victims recite problems. Leaders present solutions." That statement became one of the defining messages of the event.

Unity Is a Political Asset
One of the strongest observations emerging from the public lecture was that internal divisions have significantly weakened Igedeland's political influence. Participants noted that personal ambitions, clan rivalries and fragmented political interests have often prevented the Igede people from speaking with one voice. As a minority within Benue State, unity was identified as perhaps the greatest political capital available to the Igede people.

The lecture therefore called on political leaders, traditional institutions, professionals and members of the diaspora to build consensus rather than deepen divisions. For the 2027 elections, this lesson may prove decisive. Communities that negotiate from a position of unity often secure greater political relevance than those divided by competing personal interests.

Mentorship Must Become Part of Politics
One of the most innovative recommendations from the lecture was the proposal to establish an independent, non-partisan body responsible for mentoring, screening and recommending candidates for elective offices. Rather than allowing candidates to emerge solely through party structures or political patronage, participants recommended a process that evaluates aspirants based on integrity, competence, character, experience and commitment to public service.

Such a system, if implemented, could fundamentally transform leadership recruitment in Igedeland by ensuring that future political leaders are prepared before they seek public office. The proposal also reflects an important lesson drawn from traditional Igede leadership, where mentoring, gradual preparation and community acceptance historically formed part of leadership succession.

The Politics of Possibility
Another powerful takeaway was the call for Igedeland to broaden its political ambitions.
For many years, political discussions within the community have largely centred on offices already considered its statutory entitlement, particularly the Oju/Obi Federal Constituency seat and State Assembly positions. The lecture challenged this limited political mindset.
Participants argued that with unity, preparation, strategic networking and competent leadership, the Igede people should confidently pursue larger political opportunities including the Benue South Senatorial seat, the Deputy Governorship and even the Governorship of Benue State. This represents a shift from politics of limitation to politics of possibility. Rather than accepting perceived ceilings, the lecture encouraged the community to prepare for greater participation in the state's political future.

The Electorate Also Has a Responsibility
While much attention focused on political leaders, the lecture equally placed responsibility on voters. Participants urged the electorate to reject vote-buying, resist manipulation and vote based on competence rather than ethnicity, money or sectional interests.
This message is particularly significant as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. Ultimately, democracy produces the quality of leadership that citizens are willing to elect. If voters insist on integrity and competence, political parties and aspirants will inevitably adjust to those expectations.

The Media as Agents of Political Transformation
The Association of Igede Media Professionals reaffirmed that journalism should go beyond reporting political events to actively promoting accountability, civic education and good governance. This places an important responsibility on the media to elevate public discourse, encourage issue-based campaigns and hold elected officials accountable before and after elections.

In many respects, the public lecture itself demonstrated how the media can serve as a catalyst for community development by creating platforms for honest conversations about leadership and governance.
Why the Lecture Matters for the 2027 General Elections
The significance of the 2nd Annual Public Lecture extends well beyond its resolutions. It represents one of the most comprehensive attempts in recent years to redefine the political culture of Igedeland before another electoral cycle begins.

Instead of merely discussing who should contest elections, the conversation shifted to how leaders should emerge, what qualities they should possess, and how political leadership can produce measurable development for the people.
If the recommendations contained in the communiquรฉ are faithfully implemented, the 2027 general elections could mark the beginning of a new political cultureโ€”one driven less by sentiment and more by competence, unity, accountability and long-term development.
Whether that vision becomes reality will depend on the willingness of political leaders, traditional institutions, professionals, the media and ordinary voters to embrace the lessons from the Abuja gathering.

Conclusion
The 2nd Annual Public Lecture of the Association of Igede Media Professionals may ultimately be remembered not simply as another conference, but as a turning point in the political evolution of Igedeland. Its greatest achievement lies in challenging the community to rethink leadership beyond personalities and political calculations, and to place competence, integrity, mentorship, unity and service at the centre of political recruitment.
As the countdown to the 2027 general elections continues, the real takeaway from the lecture is clear: the future of Igedeland will not merely be determined by who wins elections, but by how leaders emerge, what values they represent, and whether the people are prepared to choose development over sentiment.
If these lessons are embraced, the 2027 elections could become more than a contest for political officesโ€”they could become the beginning of a new chapter in the political and developmental history of Igedeland.

PRESS RELEASE

OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUร‰ ON THE PROPOSED TWO-TERM ROTATIONAL ARRANGEMENT FOR OJU II STATE CONSTITUENCY

The Idelle Kaha Progressive Forum (IKPF), after careful consultation with concerned stakeholders and members of the Idelle Odum community, wishes to make the following position known regarding the proposed two-term rotational arrangement for the Oju II State Constituency seat.

First, we commend the Executive Chairman of Oju Local Government, Hon. Ominyi Jackson Adah, for his leadership in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across Oju Local Government Area. His commitment to fostering unity and strengthening community security is acknowledged and appreciated.

However, we respectfully express our strong opposition to the proposed two-term rotational arrangement for the Oju II State Constituency seat.

Our position is based on the principles of equity, justice, fairness, inclusion, and respect for existing zoning understandings that have guided political stability within Oju II State Constituency.

The existing zoning arrangement favors Idelle Odum Clan (Council Ward). In the interest of peace and continuity, Idelle Odum Clan should be allowed to complete its single four-year tenure, in line with the long-standing principle of one-term rotational leadership. Upon the completion of that tenure, the constituency seat should rotate to Ainu Clan (Council Ward). Only after these agreed rotations have been concluded should stakeholders consider any fresh discussions or review of the zoning arrangement through broad consultation and consensus.

We firmly believe that introducing a two-term arrangement at this stage would depart from the accepted rotational principle, diminish confidence among stakeholders, and risk creating avoidable political division within the constituency.

We also affirm that no individual or political office holder, irrespective of status, possesses the authority to unilaterally redefine the zoning structure of Oju II State Constituency. Any proposal affecting the political future of the constituency must emerge from transparent consultations involving representatives and stakeholders from Uwokwu, Idelle, and Ainu, with due respect for the views of every council ward.

Peace and stability are sustained through justice, mutual respect, and faithful adherence to collective agreementsโ€”not through unilateral decisions.

Accordingly, we respectfully call on the Executive Chairman of Oju Local Government, political leaders, party stakeholders, traditional rulers, youth leaders, women leaders, and all concerned citizens to support an inclusive stakeholders' dialogue that will preserve unity and strengthen confidence in the democratic process.

The Idelle Kaha Progressive Forum (IKPF) remains committed to peaceful coexistence, democratic values, and a rotational system based on one single tenure of four years, beginning with Idelle Odum Clan (Council Ward) under the existing zoning arrangement and thereafter rotating to Ainu Clan (Council Ward), thereby ensuring fairness, equity, inclusion, and lasting political stability.

Together, let us preserve the unity of Oju II State Constituency by upholding justice above personal ambition and consensus above division.

Signed:

Peace Ambassador Odeh Ako Aaron, Ph.D.
President
Idelle Kaha Progressive Forum (IKPF)

On Sunday, 2 August 2026, the Legislative Council of Oju LGA visited Akwumada Nyโ€™Igede, Maj. Gen. Ede Ode (Rtd), former Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian War College and the PDP candidate for the forthcoming Oju/Obi Federal Constituency election, to commiserate with him over the passing of his mother.

Delivering the condolence message on behalf of his colleagues, the Leader of the Council, Hon. Chris Abine, paid glowing tribute to the late mother of the distinguished candidate, describing her as a virtuous woman through whom God blessed the Igede nation with a son who rose to become the first Igede man to attain the rank of Major General in the Nigerian Army. He prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of Late Mama Akwuma Ode, who passed on at the age of 93, and described Gen. Ode as a shining light of the entire Igede nation. Hon. Abine assured the bereaved family of the Councilโ€™s solidarity and support during this period of mourning and after.

Responding, Gen. Ode expressed gratitude to the Council for taking time to identify with his family in their moment of grief. He also commended the Oju LGA for its ongoing developmental efforts, particularly the reconstruction of the Ogbubi Culvert. He praised the councillors for fostering unity and prioritizing brotherhood above political differences. Gen. Ode added that his family would continue to draw comfort from the enduring legacy of their late mother, as well as from the thoughtful visit of the Oju LGA Legislative Council.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026

Theme: "Trapped Behind the Scam"

Today, as the world marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we stand in solidarity with millions of victims whose dreams have been stolen through deception, exploitation, and modern slavery.

This year's theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam," reminds us that human trafficking often begins with false promises of jobs, education, love, travel, or a better life. Behind these scams are criminal networks that prey on the hopes and vulnerabilities of innocent people, especially women, children, and young people.

As the Founder of Seed Rehabilitation Foundation, I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to zero tolerance for all forms of human trafficking and modern slavery. Every person deserves to live in freedom, dignity, and safety. No one should ever be bought, sold, exploited, or stripped of their fundamental human rights.

We call on governments, communities, civil society organizations, faith-based institutions, parents, and the media to work together in preventing trafficking through awareness, education, vigilance, and stronger support systems for survivors. Together, we can expose the scams, protect the vulnerable, and hold traffickers accountable.

Let us raise our voices for those who cannot speak. Let us educate our communities, support survivors with compassion, and build a society where every individual can thrive free from exploitation.

Together, we can break the chains of human trafficking and restore hope, dignity, and freedom.

Say NO to Human Trafficking.
Say NO to Modern Slavery.
Protect Lives. Restore Hope.
