# # # Episode 18 — The Transfer
The room fell silent.
Ada looked at Daniel, hoping she had heard him wrong.
“Transferred?”
Daniel nodded.
“My manager said the company wants me to resume in Benin City next month.”
Ada sat down slowly.
“For how long?”
“They said it's not a temporary assignment. It's a transfer.”
Before either of them could say another word, Daniel's phone rang again.
It was his manager.
“Good evening, sir.”
Daniel listened quietly.
“Yes, sir.”
“I understand.”
After the call ended, he sighed.
“What did he say?” Ada asked.
“I have one week to decide.”
The next morning, Daniel went to see his mother.
“Mum, I need to tell you something.”
She looked up from her chair.
“What is it?”
“My office wants to transfer me to Benin.”
Mama Daniel froze.
“So... you're leaving?”
“I haven't decided.”
She became quiet.
A few months ago, she would have begged him to reject it immediately.
But this time, she held her words.
“When do they want you there?”
“Next month.”
She nodded slowly.
“I see.”
Daniel looked at her carefully.
“Aren't you going to ask me to stay?”
Mama Daniel smiled sadly.
“I want you close to me.”
She paused.
“But I also want what's best for your family.”
Daniel was surprised.
“Mum...”
“If this transfer will help your career, don't reject it because of me.”
Daniel's eyes became watery.
“You've changed.”
She laughed softly.
“I'm trying.”
That evening, Daniel and Ada sat on the small balcony of their apartment.
“What do you think?” Daniel asked.
Ada thought for a moment.
“Will the new position pay better?”
“Yes.”
“Will it help your career?”
“Yes.”
“Then we should think about it.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You're willing to move?”
“If we're together, we'll build another home.”
Daniel smiled.
“You make difficult things sound simple.”
“They're not simple.”
She held his hand.
“But we'll face them together.”
Two days later, Daniel invited his mother for dinner.
After the meal, he spoke.
“Mum, we've decided.”
She looked at both of them.
“You're accepting it?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
There was a long silence.
Then Mama Daniel stood up.
She walked to Ada.
To Ada's surprise, she hugged her.
“Take care of my son.”
Ada hugged her back.
“And you should take care of yourself too.”
Mama Daniel smiled through her tears.
“I will.”
Daniel watched them with gratitude.
The bitterness that had once filled their home had slowly been replaced with understanding.
But moving away would not be easy.
They had only one week to pack their lives into boxes.
And on moving day, an unexpected goodbye would leave all three of them in tears.

THE WICKED MOTHER-IN-LAW
Episode 17 — A New Responsibility
Two weeks passed peacefully.
Life in the new apartment finally felt normal.
Daniel went to work every morning, Ada continued making their little home beautiful, and Mama Daniel visited only on Sundays.
This time, she always called before coming.
One Thursday evening, Daniel arrived home looking worried.
Ada noticed immediately.
“What happened?”
Daniel sat down and removed his shoes.
“I received a call from the hospital.”
Ada's face became serious.
“Mummy?”
“She has a follow-up appointment next week.”
“Is everything okay?”
“She still needs to continue her medication and run another test.”
Ada sat beside him.
“So what did the doctor say?”
“She'll be fine, but she shouldn't stop taking her drugs.”
Daniel sighed deeply.
“The problem is the bill.”
Ada held his hand.
“How much is left?”
Daniel mentioned the amount.
It was more than they had planned for that month.
The rent, transport, food, and other expenses had already taken most of their salary.
Daniel leaned back.
“I'll find a way.”
Ada looked at him.
“We'll find a way.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“You always say 'we.'”
She smiled back.
“Because we're married.”
The next morning, Ada quietly opened her small savings box.
Inside was money she had been keeping little by little for a new gas cooker.
She counted it carefully.
It wasn't enough to buy the cooker anymore.
But it would cover a good part of Mama Daniel's hospital bill.
That evening, she placed the money on the table.
Daniel looked at it.
“What's this?”
“My savings.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Ada, I can't take this.”
“You're not taking it.”
She pushed it toward him.
“We're using it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You've been saving for months.”
“I know.”
“You wanted that cooker.”
“I can buy another one later.”
Daniel's eyes became wet.
“Thank you.”
Ada smiled.
“Your mother is family too.”
The following day, they went together to the hospital.
Mama Daniel was waiting for her appointment.
When Daniel paid part of the bill, she looked surprised.
“Where did you get the money?”
Daniel glanced at Ada.
Before he could answer, Ada smiled.
“We sorted it out.”
Mama Daniel noticed the look they exchanged.
Later, when Daniel stepped away to collect some documents, she quietly asked Ada,
“Did you help him?”
Ada nodded.
“I had some savings.”
Mama Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“You used your own money for me?”
“You're family, Mummy.”
Mama Daniel held Ada's hand tightly.
“I don't deserve this after everything I did.”
Ada squeezed her hand.
“We're not living in the past anymore.”
Tears rolled down Mama Daniel's cheeks.
For the first time, she realized that the daughter-in-law she once pushed away was becoming the daughter she never had.
As they left the hospital together, Mama Daniel made a silent promise.
She would never again allow jealousy to stand between her and her son's happiness.
But life had another test waiting.
That evening, Daniel received an unexpected phone call from his office.
His face changed.
“Ada…”
“What is it?”
“I've been transferred.”
Ada stared at him.
“Transferred?”
He nodded slowly.
“To another city.”
The room fell silent.
Their new beginning was about to face its biggest challenge yet.

Will Daniel accept the transfer and leave everything they have built behind?

THE WICKED MOTHER-IN-LAW
Episode 16 — Three Days Alone
Early Monday morning, Daniel zipped up his travel bag.
His office had sent him to Abuja for a three-day training.
He hugged Ada tightly.
“I'll miss you.”
Ada smiled.
“I'll be fine. Just call me when you arrive.”
“I will.”
As he picked up his bag, Mama Daniel, who had come to see him off, stood quietly by the door.
“Travel safely, my son.”
“Thank you, Mum.”
After Daniel left, the apartment became unusually quiet.
---
Around noon, Ada heard a knock.
She opened the door.
“Mummy?”
Mama Daniel stood outside with a small nylon bag.
“I bought fresh tomatoes and pepper on my way.”
Ada smiled.
“You didn't have to.”
“I know.”
She hesitated.
“I just thought… since Daniel isn't around, maybe I could check on you.”
Ada welcomed her inside.
“Thank you.”
For the first time, Mama Daniel didn't walk into the house as someone who wanted to inspect everything.
She simply sat down.
“Have you eaten?”
“Not yet.”
“Let's cook together.”
The afternoon passed peacefully.
They chopped vegetables, laughed over stories about Daniel's childhood, and even argued playfully about whether pepper soup should be extra spicy.
When the food was ready, Mama Daniel stood up.
“I should be going.”
Ada looked surprised.
“You're leaving already?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you'd stay.”
Mama Daniel smiled.
“I came to visit, not to take over your home.”
Ada's heart warmed.
She walked her to the gate.
“Thank you for today.”
Mama Daniel nodded.
“I enjoyed it too.”
---
The second day, heavy rain fell across the city.
The electricity went out.
Ada struggled to close one of the windows as the wind blew water into the sitting room.
Just then, her phone rang.
“Mummy.”
“How are you?”
“I'm okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“The rain is just giving me trouble.”
“Don't worry. I'll come.”
Less than thirty minutes later, Mama Daniel arrived with a rechargeable lamp and hot akara wrapped in paper.
“You came in this rain?”
She smiled.
“A little rain can't stop me.”
The two women sat together, eating akara while waiting for the rain to reduce.
For the first time, Ada realized she wasn't talking to the woman who had once searched her handbag.
She was talking to a mother who was trying to become better.
---
On the third evening, Daniel called.
“I'm leaving Abuja now. I'll be home tonight.”
Ada smiled.
“We're waiting.”
“We?”
Before she could answer, Mama Daniel collected the phone jokingly.
“My son!”
Daniel laughed.
“Mum! You're there?”
“Yes.”
“Are you giving Ada trouble?”
Mama Daniel laughed.
“Not anymore.”
They all laughed together.
That night, Daniel returned home tired but happy.
The moment he entered, he stopped.
His mother and wife were setting the table together.
He smiled.
“What happened here?”
Ada looked at him.
“Your mum has been keeping me company.”
Daniel turned to his mother.
“Thank you.”
Mama Daniel smiled.
“I only came to help.”
As they sat down to eat, Daniel looked around the room.
The peace he had prayed for finally seemed possible.
But peace also came with responsibility.
The next challenge would test all three of them—not through jealousy, but through sacrifice.

THE WICKED MOTHER-IN-LAW
Episode 15 — The Family Gossip
Mama Daniel looked at the woman standing in her sitting room.
It was her younger cousin, Aunty Esther.
She had come unannounced.
“Aunty,” Esther repeated, “is it true Daniel has abandoned you because of his wife?”
Mama Daniel took a deep breath.
“No.”
Esther laughed.
“Then why is he no longer living here?”
“He is married.”
“So?”
“He has his own home now.”
Esther shook her head.
“In our days, a good son didn't leave his mother.”
Mama Daniel remained quiet.
Esther continued.
“That girl has taken him away from you.”
For a moment, Mama Daniel remembered the anger she used to carry.
The accusations.
The jealousy.
The constant blame.
But she also remembered Ada rushing her to the hospital.
She remembered Ada inviting her for Sunday lunch.
And she remembered Daniel saying, “I don't want to choose between my mother and my wife.”
She looked at Esther.
“You're wrong.”
Esther blinked.
“What?”
“My son didn't abandon me.”
“But—”
“He grew up.”
Esther frowned.
“So you're taking your daughter-in-law's side?”
Mama Daniel smiled faintly.
“There are no sides.”
“She changed your son.”
“No.”
“Then what changed?”
Mama Daniel answered quietly,
“I changed.”
Esther was speechless.
---
That evening, Daniel came to visit.
Mama Daniel served him tea.
“You look happy today,” Daniel said.
She smiled.
“I had a visitor.”
“Who?”
“Esther.”
Daniel laughed.
“What did she come for?”
“To tell me that my wife stole my son.”
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“What did you say?”
Mama Daniel looked at him.
“I told her nobody stole you.”
Daniel's eyes became watery.
“Thank you, Mum.”
She patted his hand.
“I should have said that a long time ago.”
---
Later that night, Ada was washing plates when Daniel returned home.
“Mum defended you today.”
Ada stopped.
“She did?”
He nodded.
“She told our relative that I wasn't stolen.”
Ada smiled.
“I'm glad.”
Daniel hugged her.
“I think she's really changing.”
Ada smiled too.
“I hope she keeps choosing peace.”
---
The following Sunday, Mama Daniel came for lunch as usual.
This time, she arrived empty-handed.
Ada laughed.
“Mummy, no vegetables today?”
Mama Daniel laughed too.
“Today I came as a guest.”
They all sat down to eat.
Halfway through the meal, Daniel's phone rang.
It was his office.
After listening for a few seconds, he sighed.
“I have to travel to Abuja tomorrow for three days.”
Ada nodded.
“It's okay.”
Mama Daniel looked at both of them.
“Three days?”
“Yes.”
He turned to Ada.
“You'll be alright?”
“Of course.”
Mama Daniel was quiet.
As Daniel spoke about the trip, a thought crossed her mind.
Her daughter-in-law would be alone for three days.
She had two choices.
She could stay away and let Ada manage alone.
Or she could be there—not to control her, but to support her.
This time, the decision would reveal whether her change was real.

Episode 14 — The Hard Choice
Saturday finally arrived.
Daniel had invited his mother to spend the afternoon with them.
“Mum, don't cook today,” he told her on the phone. “Ada is making your favorite vegetable soup.”
Mama Daniel smiled.
“My favorite?”
“Yes.”
“Tell her I said thank you.”
When she arrived, Ada welcomed her warmly.
“Welcome, Mummy.”
“Thank you, my dear.”
For the first hour, everything went well.
The three of them laughed while preparing lunch together.
Daniel teased Ada about the first meal she had cooked after their wedding.
“You almost burned the rice.”
Ada laughed.
“I didn't almost burn it. I burned it.”
Even Mama Daniel laughed.
“You've improved.”
Ada smiled.
“Thank you.”
It was the first compliment Mama Daniel had given her without adding criticism.
---
After lunch, Daniel went to a nearby shop to buy drinks.
“Mum, I'll be back in ten minutes.”
“Okay.”
The apartment became quiet.
Ada cleared the plates while Mama Daniel watched her.
“You're taking good care of him.”
Ada looked up.
“I try my best.”
Mama Daniel nodded slowly.
“When Daniel was younger, he couldn't even wash his own plate.”
Ada smiled.
“He still forgets sometimes.”
Both women laughed.
Then Mama Daniel became serious.
“Ada.”
“Yes, Mummy?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Have you forgiven me?”
Ada stopped wiping the table.
She thought for a moment.
“I've forgiven you.”
Mama Daniel's eyes became watery.
“But…”
Ada continued gently.
“Forgiveness doesn't mean I forgot everything.”
“I understand.”
“I still get scared sometimes.”
“Scared?”
“Whenever you raise your voice, I remember the day of the missing money.”
Mama Daniel lowered her head.
“I wish I could erase that day.”
“I know.”
There was a long silence.
Finally, Mama Daniel spoke.
“I've been lonely.”
Ada looked at her.
“I know.”
“I depended on Daniel too much.”
“Yes.”
“I didn't know how to let him become someone else's husband.”
Ada walked over and sat beside her.
“You're still his mother.”
Mama Daniel nodded.
“And you're not replacing me?”
Ada smiled.
“No.”
“I just want to be his wife.”
For the first time, Mama Daniel truly heard those words.
---
Daniel returned with the drinks.
“Why are both of you so quiet?”
Ada laughed.
“We've been talking.”
“Should I be worried?”
Mama Daniel smiled.
“No.”
Daniel looked relieved.
That evening, he drove his mother home.
Before she entered her house, she turned to him.
“Daniel.”
“Yes, Mum?”
“Thank you for not giving up on me.”
Daniel hugged her.
“Thank you for trying.”
As he drove away, Mama Daniel stood at her gate watching the car disappear.
She smiled.
Then she walked into her quiet house.
The silence returned.
She looked at Daniel's old room.
It was exactly the way she had left it.
She opened the door.
His childhood football sat in one corner.
His school certificate still hung on the wall.
She sat on the bed and whispered,
“My son has grown.”
For the first time, she didn't cry because she was losing him.
She cried because she finally accepted that loving him meant letting him build his own family.
But the next morning, life brought a new challenge.
A relative arrived unexpectedly.
“Aunty,” the woman said as she entered, “is it true your son has abandoned you to live with his wife?”
Mama Daniel looked at her.
She knew her next answer would determine whether she had truly changed.

EPISODE 13 — THE BOUNDARY
For the next few weeks, things between Ada, Daniel, and Mama Daniel seemed to be getting better.
Mama Daniel started visiting their apartment more often.
Sometimes she came to help Ada cook. Other times, she simply wanted to spend time with Daniel.
At first, Ada was happy about the change.
She could see that Mama Daniel was trying.
But slowly, something began to bother her.
Mama Daniel was visiting almost every day.
One afternoon, Ada was arranging clothes in the bedroom when Mama Daniel walked in.
“Where is Daniel?” she asked.
“He is still at work,” Ada replied.
Mama Daniel frowned.
“He told me he would be home early today.”
“He called me this morning and said he might close late.”
Mama Daniel sighed.
“Since you got married, everything has changed.”
Ada stopped what she was doing.
“Mummy, Daniel is working. It has nothing to do with me.”
Mama Daniel looked at her.
“I know. I just miss my son.”
Ada softened.
“I understand. You can always call him.”
Mama Daniel nodded, but she wasn't satisfied.
That evening, Daniel returned home tired.
Mama Daniel was still there.
“Mum, you're still here?”
“Yes. I was waiting for you.”
Daniel dropped his bag.
“Is everything okay?”
Mama Daniel shook her head.
“I want you to come and sleep at home tomorrow night.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“Why?”
“I just want my son around me. Is that too much to ask?”
Ada remained quiet.
Daniel looked at her, then back at his mother.
“Mum, I can visit you tomorrow, but I can't sleep there.”
Mama Daniel's expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because this is my home too. Ada and I have our life here.”
“So now your mother can't ask you to spend one night with her?”
“Mum, that's not what I'm saying.”
Mama Daniel stood up.
“You have changed.”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“No, Mum. I haven't changed. My responsibilities have changed.”
The room became quiet.
Mama Daniel looked at Ada.
“Is this what you wanted?”
Ada was shocked.
“No, Mummy. I didn't ask Daniel to refuse you.”
Mama Daniel picked up her handbag.
“Forget it. I know when I am no longer wanted.”
Daniel followed her to the door.
“Mum, please don't make it about Ada.”
She turned around.
“You always defend her.”
Daniel answered calmly.
“Because sometimes you're blaming her for things that are my decisions.”
Mama Daniel became quiet.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel said,
“I love you, Mum. But I also love my wife. I don't want to choose between the two of you.”
Mama Daniel looked down.
“I just miss the way things used to be.”
Daniel's voice softened.
“I know. But we can't go back to the way things were. I am married now.”
Mama Daniel nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
She walked out.
Ada stood beside Daniel.
“I hope she isn't angry with you.”
Daniel sighed.
“She may be angry, but she needs to understand that loving her doesn't mean I have to give up my marriage.”
Ada held his hand.
“I don't want to come between you and your mother.”
“And I don't want my mother to come between us,” Daniel replied.
The next morning, Daniel called Mama Daniel.
“Mum, are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“I'll come and see you after work.”
There was a short silence.
“Okay,” she replied.
Later that afternoon, Mama Daniel sat alone in her house.
She thought about everything Daniel had said.
For years, she had been used to having her son close.
She had mistaken his marriage for losing him.
But now she was beginning to understand something.
Daniel was not leaving her.
He was simply building a family of his own.
And if she wanted to remain close to him, she had to learn to respect the family he had built.
That evening, when Daniel arrived, Mama Daniel surprised him.
“Daniel,” she said, “I'm sorry.”
Daniel looked at her.
“For what?”
“For trying to make you feel guilty whenever you choose your home.”
Daniel smiled gently.
“Thank you, Mum.”
Mama Daniel hugged him.
“I am still learning.”
Daniel hugged her back.
“We are all learning.”
But Mama Daniel knew that learning to respect boundaries would not be easy.
And the real test would come when she had to choose between what she wanted from Daniel and what was best for his marriage.

Episode 12 — A Test of Change
Daniel quickly walked into the kitchen.
“What happened?”
Mama Daniel pointed at the floor.
“The bowl slipped from my hand.”
Ada nodded.
“It was an accident, Mummy.”
Mama Daniel looked at her suspiciously.
“You're not angry?”
Ada shook her head.
“Why would I be angry? It was just a bowl.”
Daniel smiled.
“Exactly. Nobody is hurt.”
He picked up the broken pieces carefully.
“Please don't touch the glass. I'll clean it.”
Mama Daniel watched him.
For a moment, she looked embarrassed.
“I should have been more careful.”
Ada smiled.
“It happens.”
They returned to preparing lunch.
But Mama Daniel remained unusually quiet.
---
After lunch, Daniel went outside to take a phone call.
Mama Daniel sat with Ada in the living room.
“Ada.”
“Yes, Mummy?”
“I want to ask you something.”
“Okay.”
“Are you happy with my son?”
Ada was surprised by the question.
“Yes, I am.”
“Even after everything I did?”
Ada became quiet.
“I was hurt.”
“I know.”
“You made me feel like I wasn't good enough for Daniel.”
Mama Daniel looked down.
“I was wrong.”
Ada sighed.
“I don't want us to keep fighting.”
“Neither do I.”
Mama Daniel held her hands together.
“I think I was jealous.”
Ada looked at her.
“Jealous?”
“Yes.”
She took a deep breath.
“Before you came into Daniel's life, he was always around me. I depended on him for almost everything.”
She paused.
“When he got married, I felt like I was losing him.”
Ada listened quietly.
“I started blaming you for things that had nothing to do with you.”
Tears filled Mama Daniel's eyes.
“I know that doesn't excuse what I did.”
Ada nodded.
“No, it doesn't.”
“I don't expect you to forget everything.”
“I won't.”
Mama Daniel looked surprised.
Ada continued.
“But I can forgive you if you truly change.”
Mama Daniel wiped her tears.
“I want to.”
At that moment, Daniel returned.
He looked at both women.
“Everything okay?”
Mama Daniel smiled.
“Yes.”
She stood up.
“I should go home.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“Already?”
“Yes.”
She picked up her bag.
“I don't want to disturb you and your wife.”
Daniel smiled.
“You're not disturbing us.”
Mama Daniel looked at Ada.
“I'll see you next Sunday.”
Ada smiled.
“Okay, Mummy.”
Mama Daniel walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned around.
“Thank you for giving me another chance.”
Ada nodded.
“We'll try.”
Mama Daniel left.
Daniel closed the door and turned to his wife.
“You know what?”
“What?”
“I think Mum is finally beginning to understand.”
Ada smiled.
“I hope so.”
Daniel pulled her into a hug.
“We'll take it one day at a time.”
---
The following week, Mama Daniel called Daniel.
“My son, are you free on Saturday?”
“I think so. Why?”
“I want to come and help Ada with some cooking.”
Daniel smiled.
“Okay, Mum.”
When he told Ada, she was surprised.
“She wants to help me?”
“Yes.”
Ada smiled.
“That would be nice.”
But when Saturday came, Mama Daniel arrived with a different attitude.
She walked into the kitchen and immediately noticed how Ada had arranged everything.
“You keep your kitchen differently from mine.”
Ada smiled.
“I know.”
Mama Daniel picked up a pot.
“This is too small for the amount of food you're cooking.”
Ada laughed.
“I've managed with it.”
Mama Daniel shook her head.
“Young women these days don't know how to prepare food properly.”
Ada's smile disappeared slightly.
Daniel, who was passing through the kitchen, stopped.
“Mum…”
Mama Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel smiled gently.
“You promised to help, not criticize.”
Mama Daniel became quiet.
Then she laughed.
“You're right.”
She put the pot down.
“I'm sorry, Ada.”
Ada smiled.
“It's okay.”
Mama Daniel looked at her.
“No. I'm serious.”
She took a deep breath.
“I need to learn how to be your mother-in-law without trying to run your home.”
Ada looked at Daniel.
Then back at Mama Daniel.
“Thank you.”
For the first time, the three of them laughed together.
Perhaps the situation was finally changing.
But changing old habits would not happen overnight.
And Mama Daniel still had a lot to learn.

Episode 11 — The Unexpected Visitor
Three days passed.
Mama Daniel refused to answer Daniel's calls.
Whenever he called, the phone rang until it stopped.
He became worried.
“What if she's still angry?” he asked.
Ada looked at him.
“She probably needs time.”
“I still want to check on her.”
“Then let's go after work.”
Daniel nodded.
---
That afternoon, someone knocked on their apartment door.
Ada opened it.
It was Mrs. Rose.
“Good afternoon.”
“Good afternoon, Ma.”
Mrs. Rose smiled.
“I hope I'm not disturbing you.”
“Not at all. Please come in.”
She sat down and looked at Ada.
“I actually came to tell you something.”
Ada became curious.
“What is it?”
“I saw your mother-in-law this morning.”
Ada listened quietly.
“She was at the pharmacy.”
“Is she okay?”
“She looked fine.”
Mrs. Rose smiled.
“I just thought your husband might be worried. I heard she hasn't been answering his calls.”
Ada thanked her.
After Mrs. Rose left, Ada called Daniel immediately.
“Your mum is okay.”
“How do you know?”
“She was seen at the pharmacy this morning.”
Daniel sighed with relief.
“At least she's fine.”
---
That evening, Daniel and Ada went to his mother's house together.
Daniel knocked.
After a few seconds, the door opened.
Mama Daniel stood there.
She looked surprised to see both of them.
“You came.”
Daniel smiled.
“Of course.”
“I've been calling you.”
“I know.”
“Why weren't you answering?”
Mama Daniel looked away.
“I needed space.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.”
Ada greeted her politely.
“Good evening, Mummy.”
“Good evening.”
The atmosphere was awkward.
Daniel entered first.
He noticed groceries on the table.
“Mum, you went out today?”
“Yes.”
“You could have told me if you needed anything.”
“I managed.”
Daniel sat down.
“Mum, are you still angry with me?”
Mama Daniel sighed.
“I was.”
“And now?”
She looked at Ada.
“I've been thinking.”
Ada remained quiet.
Mama Daniel continued.
“I kept blaming you for taking my son away.”
She paused.
“But the truth is... I was struggling to accept that things have changed.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“I still don't like being alone.”
His expression softened.
“You're not alone, Mum.”
“I know.”
“But the house feels empty.”
Ada finally spoke.
“Mummy... if you don't mind, you can come for lunch every Sunday.”
Mama Daniel looked at her in surprise.
“You're inviting me?”
“Yes.”
“You're not afraid I'll cause trouble?”
Ada smiled gently.
“I believe we can start again.”
For the first time in a long while, Mama Daniel smiled without pretending.
“Thank you.”
Daniel felt hopeful.
Maybe things were finally getting better.
---
The following Sunday, Mama Daniel arrived carrying a small bag.
Ada opened it.
“Mummy, what's this?”
“I brought fresh vegetables.”
Ada smiled.
“We'll cook together.”
As they entered the kitchen, Daniel watched from the living room.
He smiled to himself.
Then suddenly—
A loud crash came from the kitchen.
Daniel jumped up and rushed inside.
A glass bowl had shattered on the floor.
Mama Daniel stood frozen.
Ada looked down at the broken pieces.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Mama Daniel whispered,
“It was an accident.”
Ada looked at her.
This was the moment that would decide whether old wounds would open again—or begin to heal.

THE WICKED MOTHER-IN-LAW
Episode 10 — The Interference
A few days passed peacefully.
Daniel went to work every morning, while Ada slowly turned their new apartment into a home.
She bought cheap curtains from the market, arranged the kitchen, and placed a small flower vase on the center table.
When Daniel returned that evening, he smiled.
“This place is beginning to look like home.”
Ada laughed.
“We're building it little by little.”
Daniel hugged her.
“And we'll build it together.”
---
The next afternoon, Ada's phone rang.
It was Mama Daniel.
“Good afternoon, Mummy.”
“Where is Daniel?”
“He's at work.”
“Tell him to come and see me immediately.”
Ada became concerned.
“Is everything okay?”
“Just tell him.”
The call ended.
When Daniel received the message, he left work early and rushed to his mother's house.
“Mum, what happened?”
Mama Daniel was sitting comfortably on the sofa.
“I'm fine.”
Daniel looked confused.
“You said I should come immediately.”
“I missed you.”
Daniel sighed.
“Mum, I left work because I thought it was an emergency.”
Mama Daniel smiled.
“Can't a mother miss her son?”
Daniel sat quietly.
“You can, Mum. But don't make me think something terrible has happened.”
She nodded, but inside she wasn't convinced she had done anything wrong.
---
That evening, Daniel returned home later than usual.
Ada opened the door.
“You're back.”
He looked tired.
“Mum was fine.”
Ada frowned.
“So why did she call you urgently?”
“She said she missed me.”
Ada said nothing.
Daniel noticed her silence.
“What are you thinking?”
“I just hope this doesn't become a habit.”
Daniel held her hand.
“It won't.”
---
Two days later, it happened again.
This time, Mama Daniel called while Daniel and Ada were eating dinner.
“My son, come quickly.”
“Mum, what's wrong?”
“My tap isn't working.”
“I'll send a plumber.”
“No. I want you.”
Daniel looked at Ada.
She quietly continued eating.
After the call ended, Daniel sighed.
“I'll be back soon.”
Ada forced a smile.
“Go.”
He left.
Two hours later, he returned.
“The plumber fixed it in five minutes.”
Ada looked at him.
“So she didn't really need you.”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“I think she just wanted me there.”
Ada's voice was calm.
“Daniel, your mother misses you. I understand that.”
He nodded.
“But if every small thing becomes your responsibility, we'll never have time to build our own home.”
Daniel knew she was right.
---
The following Sunday, Daniel made a decision.
He invited his mother to their apartment for lunch.
When Mama Daniel arrived, Ada welcomed her warmly.
“Mummy, you're welcome.”
“Thank you.”
Ada served jollof rice, fried chicken, and salad.
Mama Daniel tasted the food.
“It tastes nice.”
Ada smiled.
“Thank you.”
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Mum, I want us to agree on something.”
Mama Daniel looked at him.
“What is it?”
“I'll always take care of you.”
She nodded.
“But unless it's a real emergency, please don't ask me to leave work or rush over.”
Mama Daniel's smile faded.
“So your wife has finally taught you what to tell me.”
Ada immediately spoke.
“No, Mummy. This is Daniel's decision.”
Mama Daniel stood up.
“I knew it.”
“Mum, please sit down,” Daniel pleaded.
“No.”
She picked up her handbag.
“You have changed.”
Daniel's voice was firm.
“I have grown, Mum.”
The words hung in the room.
Mama Daniel looked at her son with tears in her eyes.
Without another word, she walked out.
Ada looked at Daniel.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded slowly.
“It hurt.”
“But it needed to be said.”
As they stood together at the doorway, neither of them noticed Mrs. Rose watching from her balcony.
She shook her head and whispered to herself,
“This family still has a long way to go.”
