WHO IS YOUR LEADER?

One conversation I regularly have with my daughters is, "Who are your friends now?" When I visit their school, I intentionally sit with their friends and chat. I am not just being friendly. I want to see who is shaping their thinking. I want to know who their unseen leader is.

Friend, who is your leader? Anyone who influences you the most is your leader (Romans 12:2). Many of us are being led without our consent. We give attention to voices, people, and content that have nothing to do with our future. If you fail to manage your influences, you will arrive at a destination you never planned for (1 Kings 12:1-16).

You do not really choose your destination in life; you choose your devotion, and your devotion chooses your destination (1 Timothy 4:15). Your determination cannot save you if you board the wrong vehicle. You will still end up in the wrong place (Luke 15:15). That is why environment is often stronger than intention.

The right resolve in the wrong environment will still produce the wrong result (1 Corinthians 15:33). For some people, just changing their circle and their influences will change their life with less struggle. That is why God is intentional about where He places us per time. We must be intentional, too (Psalm 1:1-3).

The voices you hear consistently will configure your mind and shape how you see life (1 Samuel 3:1-11). Maturity is learning to choose your influences on purpose because if you don't, influences will choose you. That is how a person can attend church but still be led by the world, not by its truth and atmosphere (James 4:4).

So let me ask you like I ask my daughters: Who is your leader? Who are you sounding like lately without realizing it (Hosea 7:8-9)? What music, what pages, what content are you now drawn to, even when it clashes with your values? The proof is simple. Just look at your lifestyle and your results (Hebrews 13:17).

DEVELOP THE RIGHT APPETITE

Years ago, my wife once received a 5-year-old in her school. Her parents said she never eats pepper. All her food was plain. It sounded strange. My wife said, "Give me time. She will change." In less than two weeks, she was eating peppery meals. Her appetite had been trained.

Friend, you need to develop the right appetite. Those who handled you at the start of your Christian journey shape your doctrine and growth trajectory (2 Timothy 1:5, 3:15). Many were handled wrongly and never exposed to the right meal. They age in church but not in scriptural understanding (1 Corinthians 14:20).

Some grow in church but not in Christ. They attend services but are not in touch with Christ and sound doctrine. They keep learning yet never come to the knowledge of truth (2 Timothy 3:7). To be solid with lasting impact, you must develop real hunger for the Word (Jeremiah 15:16).

Your maturity is measured by how much sound doctrine you can endure (Hebrews 5:11-14). Today, a scripture-filled sermon is called boring. Preachers then tell stories to engage minds. But you can engage minds without engaging spirits. Until your spirit is engaged, no real transformation happens (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Some think sound doctrine must be enjoyable to be true. If not sweet, they discard it. The Bible says to endure sound doctrine, not merely enjoy it (2 Timothy 4:3). To endure is to stay with it until you are transformed, even when your flesh dislikes it. Spirit growth rarely pleases the flesh (1 Corinthians 3:1-2).

Many believers are head-full but heart-empty. Their spirit is starved and famished (Amos 8:11-12). Their appetite craves only what excites the mind. The Word is food for the spirit. How much scripture do you study daily? Appetite can be lost but also regained. Return to the Word and to Bible-centered fellowship. Your life depends on it (Luke 4:4).

PRAYERFUL PREPARATION

While on campus, no matter how much I still had to study, I never read into the exam hall. I prayed into it. Aside from earlier prayers, I reserved 30 minutes to pray before heading in. It gave me great advantage. I never saw prayer as a waste of time. It's part of my preparation.

Friend, prayer is not a waste of time (Acts 6:4). Every meaningful preparation must start, continue, and end with prayer. Many treat prayer as separate from preparation, even as a distraction. Kingdom people know prayer impacts results. Ours must be prayerful preparation (2 Chronicles 27:6).

Prayer is to preparation what sharpening the axe is to cutting a tree (Ecclesiastes 10:10). Prayer must not replace work or preparation, but it must not be neglected either. It is not for lazy people. We must not cover laziness with prayer nor neglect prayer because of work (Romans 12:11).

We must pray as if everything depends on prayer and work as if everything depends on work. Like Nehemiah's men, be diligent and prayerful at the same time. Hold your weapon with one hand and work with the other (Nehemiah 4:17). Executives, traders, politicians, pastors, everyone must pray (1 Timothy 2:8).

Prayer brings divinity to bear on humanity for productivity (Acts 12:1-11). Without God's involvement, little gets done, and what is done may not last. Prayer ensures your labour is not in vain. It breaks barriers and brings speed. You achieve much in little time (Zechariah 4:6-10).

Prayer moves you from assumption to accuracy. You don't fully know what to do until you pray (2 Chronicles 20:12). Jumping to conclusions without prayer makes many jump into failure. When confused, discouraged, timid, or overwhelmed, pray. In failure and success, pray. Pray always (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

When you think that God is coming too late. He's coming in a big way. Waiting on God is not wasting away.
