🔥 IGNITE @ 10 — DAY 1/30

10 YEARS AGO, THE STORY BEGAN…

Ten years ago, our founder Kemi Oguntimehin witnessed something that devastated her .

Some people living with sickle cell had lost their lives not because there was nothing that could be done, but because of ignorance, lack of information, and the absence of proper support, especially in rural communities.

She couldn't stop thinking about it.

She kept asking myself:

What if their parents had known?
What if they had received the right information earlier?
What if someone had been there to guide them?

She was devastated.

But somewhere in that pain came a conviction:

Something must be done.

We couldn't continue watching preventable deaths happen because families didn't have access to the information and support they needed.

And that's how Ignite Sickle Cell Initiative began.

Not with a big office.
Not with a huge team.
Not with millions of naira.

It started with a simple decision:

We must do something.

Something to reduce ignorance about sickle cell.

Something to reach families who were often left behind.

Something to take sickle cell education and support into rural communities.

Something to help reduce preventable deaths.

And so, Ignite began.

Today, 10 years later, we look back at where we started, the people we've met, the communities we've reached, the families we've supported, the lessons we've learned and the lives we've touched.

But the story doesn't end here.

The story begins again.

This September, as we celebrate 10 years of Ignite, we're telling the stories behind the journeyand raising funds to continue the work.

Reflecting on Our World Sickle Cell Day Outreach

On Thursday, Ignite Sickle Cell Initiative commemorated World Sickle Cell Day with a sickle cell awareness outreach and health insurance enrollment exercise in Arigidi Akoko, reaching children and families across Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The outreach focused on educating community members about sickle cell disease, the importance of early diagnosis, routine care, and access to quality healthcare services. We also supported the enrollment of children and individuals living with sickle cell disease into the Ondo State Health Insurance Scheme, helping to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on families.

This impactful outreach was made possible through our partnership with the Ondo State Contributory Health Commission (ODCHC), whose commitment continues to expand healthcare access for vulnerable populations across the state.

We are equally grateful to the Bisi Ogunjobi Foundation and all our donors and supporters whose generosity helped bring this outreach to life. Your support is helping us reach underserved communities with life-saving information, healthcare access, and hope.

At Ignite Sickle Cell Initiative, our mission remains clear: to reduce child mortality, improve access to healthcare, and ensure that every child living with sickle cell disease receives care with dignity and has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy Father's Day!

Today, as we commemorate World Sickle Cell Day, we reflect on how far we have come and the work that still lies ahead.

At Ignite Sickle Cell Initiative, our mission has always been clear:

To reduce child mortality associated with sickle cell disease through education, early diagnosis, access to healthcare, and patient-centered support.

For many years, children born with sickle cell disease in underserved communities faced enormous barriers to care. Many families lacked access to accurate information, routine healthcare services, health insurance, and the support needed to effectively manage the condition.

Through strategic partnerships, community engagement, advocacy, and direct support programs, we have continued to bridge this gap.

This means more children now have access to healthcare services without the burden of catastrophic out-of-pocket expenses on their families.

While many people see our awareness campaigns online, much of our work happens offline—in rural and underserved communities where access to healthcare remains limited.

Our interventions focus on:

✅ Sickle cell education and awareness

✅ Linkage to healthcare services

✅ Parent and caregiver support

✅ Advocacy for patient-centered care

✅ Community outreach and engagement

Over the years, we have witnessed encouraging progress. More families are seeking healthcare early, more children are receiving routine care, and more communities are embracing accurate information about sickle cell disease.

Yet, our work is far from over.

Every child living with sickle cell disease deserves the opportunity to survive, thrive, attend school, pursue their dreams, and live with dignity.

As we mark this year's World Sickle Cell Day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind because of where they live, their socioeconomic status, or lack of access to information and healthcare.

We extend our appreciation to our partners, volunteers, healthcare workers, caregivers, advocates, and every supporter who continues to make this work possible.

Together, we are changing the narrative from stigma and preventable deaths to hope, access, and opportunity.
